STONES’ DIRECTORY.

“ And still the wonder grew how one small head could carry all he knew.” Slightly altering the application of Ooldsmith’s lines, one might well be excused for wondering how a comparatively small volume like Stone’s Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki Directory and New Zealand Annual (for a copy of the 1893*94

edition of which we have to thank the publishers) could, be made to contain all that is set but in its page,of contents. But wonder ceases after a glance through the handsomely bound book. Facts and, figures, town, suburban, and country directories, tourist routes, etc., have been got into the smallest possible space, and this, too, without any sacrifice of clearness, and both externally and internally the Directory is a model publication, creditable alike to compiler, printer, and binder. It is, in short, built on lines that make it invaluable to settlers and business men, containing as it does the Customs tariff, admirable maps, summaries of legislative enactments, information relating to official and judicial matters, farmers’ tables, exports and imports, garden notes, tide tables, and references to one hundred and one other subjects concerning which no up-to-date business man or farmer can afford to be ignorant. , The Directory is a credit to the colony, and is indirectly one of the best advertisements it could have. There are still some benighted people at Home who believe that Hew Zealand is largely given over to Maoris and cannibalism—a glance at Stones’ well-filled Directory would undeceive them once for all.
