GOSSIP.
A correspondent of a Home paper who was at the opening of the Imperial Institute says she noticed that though the Queen smiled and bowed in response to the cheers of thousands, the tears were coursing down her, cheeks. Those terrible children! As a Shropshire rent collector was out on his rounds he called at a house and asked the little child who answered the door where its mother was. “ She has gone to the town marketing.” Rent collector : “ What town ?” Child (in a loud voice, to the mother upstairs)—“ What town have you gone to ?” It is rumoured that Professor Koch, whose alleged consumption specific attracted so much attention several years ago, and who has been divorced from his wife, is about to marry a young actress. The Eskimos who have beenbrought for show to the Chicago Exhibition ai’e in, a rebellious mood. It was intended that they should appear exactly as they are at home—clothed in skins and furs from top to toe, but they demand to be dressed like other folk. The women have a fanCy for petticoats and ribbons, and the men for duck trousers.
