Country News

TE ANAU,

We have liad a proper taste of winter at last. After tlie recent snow-fall, the heaviest locally experienced since 1878, rain set in, but so far as I can learn stock have not suffered much from either rain or snow. In some places the snow was eight inches deep. Messrs Cummings and Roberts have completed the survey of the township areas. Before leaving the district they visited the Clinton Valley' and Sutherland falls under the guidance of Mr Duncan, and were delighted with the scenery. Captain Brodrick reports that he lately made another search for the remains of the late Mr Quintin McKinnon, hut without success. The Government were to have erected some huts on the track to Milford Sound, hut the project appears to have fallen through. Where the fault lies I know not, but the huts are badly wanted, and perhaps our member will see his way to give the “ powers that he ” a hint on the subject. Everything is very quiet here just now just the place for anyone seeking to forget the world and its worries for a space, Ho telephones ■or telegraphs —no pre-sessional addresses. Some day, though, I suppose we shall change all that, and become more practical and less picturesque.
