CONFERENCE OF SOUTHLAND TEACHERS.

We have to acknowledge receipt of the annual report of the Southland Teachers Institute, together with the programme of the Annual Conference to be held on the 28th, 2‘Jth and 30th of the current month. The report and balance-sheet give evidence of great progress, both numerically and financially, during the past year, and the teachers of the district are in the happy position of being able to congratulate themselves upon having a “ little surplus.” The sessions of the conference are to be held during the day at 2 p.m. and in the evening at 7.30. The place of meeting is the Southland High Schools, an eminently suitable building, which will doubtless be filled to overflowing. The papers to' be read are generally of an . .interesting character, those at the earlier session each day being by members of the teaching profession, while the evening sessions of Wednesday and Thursday will have as contributors several w r ell-known gentlemen, the Revs. W. White, M.A.,and R. Thornton, M.A., and Messrs T. Denniston and R. McNab. A notable feature of the programme is the fact that the ladies are beginning to assert themselves, the names of two members of the gentler sex appearing among those contributing papers, viz., Miss W. S. Bain, on the “ Remuneration of Teachers ; ” and Miss Jane B. Jamieson, 8.A., on “ Gur Girls.” The latter young lady, we understand, gained the coveted suffix to her name at, the last University Examination, and we doubt not that her paper will fully warrant her right to the title. Appended to the programme is the statement that all persons interested in education are cordially invited to attend, and as the cause of education is of so immediate importance to many residents in the town and surrounding district, we anticipate that the meetings will be largely attended by many other than teachers.
