PROPOSED FARMERS’ UNION.
The Bruce Herald says “ the Waitahuna Farmers’ Club has gone a long step in the right direction by suggesting a Farmers’ Union for the counties of Taieri, Bruce, Clutha, and Tuapeka. This proposition (adds our contemporary) was submitted by letter to the Tokomairiro Farmers’ Club and was heartily and favourably entertained. ; and it was furthermore resolved that an early conference of delegates to be appointed was highly desirable to further the object. Now if this most desirable combination of four, among the chief of the agricultural counties in New Zealand, can, only be effected, we pi’edict it will be but the first step to strong agricultural federation that will gradually extend all through the Middle Island, and then across Cook Strait to the North, and that is just what is wanted, agriculturalists, including pastoralists in touch throughout New Zealand. And there is nothing so conducive to such an end as a combination of plain farmers, to commence with, without admixture of any other element. There is ample shrewdness and intelligence among other ‘ farmer folk ' to carry such a project through triumphantly, and they would, moreover, exactly apprehend the ground they were standing on, a pure agricultural basis, on which to erect the superstructurl of general agricultural federation.”
