BLUFF.
One or two cases of measles have beea reported during the week. A meeting of those interested in the form, ation of a Sailors’ Best was held on Tuesday night, the mayor, Mr W. C. Gray, presidingA motion was carried that a sailors’ rest was a pressing necessity, and a committee appointed to give the motion practical effect. As a very suitable site has already been obtained, and abundant assistance promised, the “Best” should.in the near future be & eallfcy . Our footballers journeyed to Invercargill on Wednesday to try conclusions with the second Star team.' Upon taking the field, however, the Beds looked so dangerous that their opponents considered it advisable ta strengthen their ranks with players from the first fifteen, and this combination eventually proved too strong for • the local- players, although they held their own well till thefinish. Given a fine day next Wednesday, the la*£ holiday of the season, we should enjoy ourselves. Those who elect to stay at home to put in the day, may witness an impromptu regatta in the morning, and football matches in the afternoon . The proprietor of the new building upont which Messrs Shaw and McLeod have been engaged for some time, will shortly apply for a publican’s license, and in- view of this, signatures are*being solicited for and against the granting, of the same. We have had sufficient rain lately to fill all the tanks, and store an immense body of water in the reservoir. The fire brigade are taking advantage of this, and-going, in for assiduous practice. The Masons of Lodge “ Fortitude ” hold their annual ball on the evening of the 23rd inst. The manner in which fit is celebrated is too well known to require comment. - The freezing works have their storage capacity taxed to the utmost, and will be. considerably hampered in their operations till the arrival of the “ Star of Victoria.’* which will be here in about two weeks time.
