At the last meeting of the Harbour Board Mr Waterson gave notice that he would move “ That the salaries of the Board’s officers be increased 10 per cent all round, and that the day of meeting be Thursday instead of Tuesday. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening—Cr. Lee in the chair. Notice of motion was given to raise the upset rental of unlet borough sections to 25s per annum. The council placed on record its regret at the death of the late Premier. A football match between “ Old Buffers ” and members of the Awarua club was played on, Wednesday for the benefit of George Preston, a small admission fee being charged to witness the game. The old buffers battled right yeomanly for the first three spells, but the want of condition told its tale in the last twenty minutes, and they were eventually beaten by 18 points to nil. Spectators were not quite so numerous as was expected, those present, however, were very liberal in their donations, the gate' money amounting to £3 IDs. An accident occurred last Tuesday at the new building in course of erection by Messrs Shaw and McLeod. A labourer named John Sim was ascending a ladder, when he fell. It is thought that beyond a severe shake his injuries are not of a serious nature, and latest accounts reported his doing well. A start will be made at the bailing of the new Presbyterian church very shortly, and it is the intention to call for tenders for the erection of a manse also.
