Mataura.
After a long spell of dry weather, the recent change to rain was more exceedingly welcome. On Tuesday morning a fire destroyed Mr Graham’s house, Waimumu. Little or nothing was saved, and the buildings were uninsured. On Friday afternoon the pupils and teachers of the Mat aura school presented Miss Shanks with a handsome combination workbox and writing desk, very nicely inscribed. Mr Macandrew, in making' the presentation, referred in laudatory terms to the good feeling existing between Miss Shanks and her pupils and to the painstaking and patient manner in which she had carried out her duties during her long connection with the school. Mr Burnside suitably responded on behalf of Miss Shanks. Mr Wright, of Milton, has opened a furniture warehouse here. He is also manufacturing furniture, and will be able to give employment to five or six men for some time to come. The following have been picked to represent Mataura in their football match at Gore on Saturday afternoon —■ Pullback, Clark ; three-quarter backs, Cameron, Wade, and McLeod ; halfs, Burnside and Jones ; forwards, T. Smith, Carroll, Catherill, Collins, Arnett, Hamilton, Stickles, Shanks, and Mason.
