Mr A. J. Parsons, ex-mayor of Wanganui, is to be the Government candidate for the late Premier’s seat. The Public Trustee, Wellington, acting under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act of last session, offered 54 lots, comprising 13,000 acres of bush land in various parts of Taranaki, for lease by public tender. Nearly 170 tenders were received, the highest giving an increase on the upset rentals of, in some cases, over 150 per cent. About 60 families will settle these 13,000 acres. In a letter found on the body Cook stated that it was in consequence of drink that he determined to take his life.
