Mr A. J. Parsons, ex-mayor of Wanganui, is to be the Government candidate for the late Premier’s seat. The Public Trustee, Wellington, acting under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act of last session, offered 54 lots, comprising 13,000 acres of bush land in various parts of Taranaki, for lease by public tender. Nearly 170 tenders were received, the highest giving an increase on the upset rentals of, in some cases, over 150 per cent. About 60 families will settle these 13,000 acres. Mrs Tollemache, widow of the late Hon. E. Tollemache, is dead. It is believed that this means another windfall for the colonial revenue in the shape of legacy duty.’ At a tailoresses social the Hon. Mr Eigg declared that sweating had been practised in Wellington, and that women were making trousers for 9d per pair, their wages being 2s 3d per day. The charge preferred by a second-hand •dealer in Wellington against Detective Ede have been dismissed. Dr Cahill, or Wellington, has been fined the minimum penalty of £5 for failing to make to return of his income. This is the first case of the kind in the colony. Chas. Cook, aged 23, porter at the Metropolitan Hotel, was found dead in Hagely Park, Christchurch, with two bullet wounds in his head. In a letter found on the body Cook stated that it was in consequence of drink that he determined to take his life.
