AGRICULTURAL NOTES.
Fifty two and four-tooth Lincoln rams arrived by the Mararoa from Melbourne this week for Mr J. C. Ellis, of Merrivale. They came from South Australia.
According to the Sydney Mail, 1893 is likely to be a cruel year to New South Wales. In the eastern half of the colony there has been much rain, with floods and great loss of crops, while in the eastern districts there has been drought and indications of starvation. A firkin of Danish butter recently imported by a firm in Warrnambool, Victoria, was found to be unduly sweet as compared with the local-made article. On being exposed to the air for a few days the Danish lost all its colour and sweetness and became unfit for the table, while the Victorian, though exposed to the air, tasted as well as when first opened. The largest butter factory in the world is stated to be located in Vermont, America. Twelve thousand cows, owned by 700 farmers supply it with cream, and the average daily product is five tons of butter. A cart load of salt is used every two months. A Victorian farmer lately lost fourteen cows and a horse by poison. They strayed out of a paddock and ate poisoned apples set as a bait for rabbits. Edinburgh, it is claimed, has the largest dairy cow population of any city in the world, with 22,000 cows, Dublin coming next with 11,000, and London third with 8000, while Glasgow, the second city in the empire, has only 2000.
