We should before this have made acknowledgment of the generous support which this journal has received at the. hands of the business community of the district. Its reception by the reading public has also been' most encouraging, and we intend,, by; the-’ introduction of several ; new and: attractive - features, to make the paper still more welcome to our already wide circle of readers. A Dunedin letter, cycling notes, and several, other articles are crowded out of this issue. His Lordship Bishop Nevill arrives in In* vercargill to-day, and will officiate to-morrow morning at All. Saints’ Church, Gladstone,and at St. John’s in the evening, . ; The New Zealand Shipping Co.’s s.s. Ruahine will not leave Lyttelton for London till the 25th inst. She takes a large number of homeward-bounders. A mail for the United Kingdom and AuS- - tralia closes aVlnvercargill at 10.15 a.m. on Monday. A sketch by His Worship the Mayor, en- ; titled “The Brass Nugget,” will appear in our next issUe. - A number of educational leases will be sold on Ist May by Mr G. An indication of the :• approach of the electoral campaign is afforded by the fact that the new rolls are to.be taken in hand shartly, . Tillthen, it would be as well to suspend judgment . on the questions at issue. A meeting is to be held in Invercargill this afternoon to form a Farmers’ Union on workable lines. The movement should havethe hearty support of every settler in the - district, “ Whom God hath joined let no maw put;., asunder,” cannot have much meaning in the United States. During the last 20 years--330,000 couples there have been disunited through the agency, of the. Divorce Courts. A requisition asking the Hon. Attention is called to tho advertisement of the Farmers’ Alliance and Supply Company of New Zealand, Limited. The promoters who have acquired the business of the well-known firm of Messrs 11. and F. McDonald, Esk street, claim that they are inaugurating for the benefit of the agricultural and pastoral community of Otago and Southland, thesystem which has proved such a, boon, toCanterbury settlers,, viz.: that of co-operation. Wc understand that the company will make-, a feature of the supply department—selling all manner of farm and household requisites - at the lowest possible co-operative rates, and shareholders will, of course, make a saving in commissions. The business will be under the - capaple management of Mr H. E. McDonald, and Mr F. J. McDonald will conduct the auctioneering, a branch of business for which his fitness is well-known.
Fillis’ circus and. menagerie arrived at theBluff by the Waihora on, Thursday, The work of getting the great show to .Invercargill, was completed by Friday morning, the lorriesof Messrs, Duthie and Co. (Colonial Carrying - Co.) soon had the cages wit h the wild animals and the other belongings of the organisation at their destination in the paddock facing the hospital; Their advent was hailed with delight by the young folks, who “snatched a fearful joy” from the roaring of the lions, and .made friends with the elephants. _ The horses, a splendid lot of animals 1 , came in for great admiration, The first performance opened shortly after. 3 p.m., and attracted a very large audience. Two entertainments will be rriven to-day —afternoon and evening—and with special trains at reduced rates there is sure to be a big influx of country visitors-
