FARM NOTES.
A ranch at Puget Sound, Washington, contains 100,000 chickens. Twelve thousand turkeys arrived in England last Christmas in prime condition from Canada. The largest holder of afforested land in Scotland appears to he the Duke of Sutherland, who owns no less than 212,658 acres of that description, yielding a rental, however, of only £6,845, or 7fd an acre. Eggs are a natural accompaniment to a milk farm. Poultry thrive on milk, whether fresh or clabbered. An exchange declares that the man who starts a farm for large tender young fowls, to be sold when twelve weeks old, will make a respectable fortune within a few years. “ Athletic ” beef is the name given by a contemporary to the joints from stock that has been travelled far before being killed. The exercise makes them too muscular for gastronomic purposes. The Agent-General has written to the Agricultural Department that the market for New Zealand produce is at present in a bad way as the result of inferior butter rushed on the market during the past year. He urges improvement as to grading and means of transit, as, unless this is effected, New Zealand produce will not hold its own.
