THE CRINOLINE QUESTION.

The lady who writes as John Strange Winter, replying in a Home paper to a correspondent who professes to be a British manufacturer, says she has not the very smallest desire to interfere with the courses of legitimate trade, and adds : I. believe that if the crinoline becomes generally worn some of our home industries, which during the last twenty years have been brought to great perfection, will suffer most seriously, as it will be perfectly impossible for the ordinary woman —never a creature overburdened with strength —to wear gowns of the beautiful stuffs, serges, cloths, and velvets and velveteens that she wears now. It seems almost incredible to an ordinary mind that any business man can seriously ask the nation to turn its back upon these flourishing home industries for the sake of biinging in a material like muslin, which is absolutely unsuitable to our none too kindly climate. A great many women (and all the men) in this country are against the revival! of the crinoline, which, be it remembered, was introduced in 1856 not for any more philanthropic reason than tbc personal convenience of one woman. The number of those who have joined the Ho Crinoline League, and who have pledged themselves to do all in their power to prevent the wealing of crinolines, is considerably over 11,000, and includes women of all ranks, from the duchess to the wife of the working man.
