The Rev. Mr Rott, of the Wesleyan Church is about to leave the Riverton district for a charge in Christchurch. Educationally he stands high among„his confreres, and he is a preacher of much promise. As a theologian -Mr Rott is full of that broad spirit which is causing the different churches to reconsider some of their doctrines. Proposing to a girl when marriage is not even on the dim horizon is (remarks ‘* Arnica” in the British. Weekly) a piece of sheer - audacity which no man has a right to permit himself, and no parent has a right to sanction. I know a family some years ago Avhoro ail the daughters were engaged—one fur live, one for three, and one for two years —and when I last heard of them, there was not a whisper of marriage m the ease of any one of them. The lovers came to see their sweethearts almost everyday. and remained all day long, and smoked, and played tennis, and made themselves quire at homo, and in the evening the father betook himself to walk, end the moth.or ret ired to her bedroom with disapproval and annoyance, going simply because custom sanctions the atrocity of lovers having* sejnmitc apartments :!or then* confabulations. and because the dining* room, and breakfast room, am; drawing room wore ail separately required.
