COUNTY WORKS.

REPORT BY THE ENGINEER. The County Engineer (Mr. J. T. M. Brewster) reported as follows for the past month, at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday: — Tokomaru Riding. General maintenance has been carried out on the roads in this ridfrig. Grading has been done on the majority of roaus north of Makorua and on the Main Highway. The grader has been •employed cutting back grass on, Akers' Road." The metalling of Ashlea-Tcmu-kanui Road has been completed. Drains on Kara Koad have been cleaned out. Plans of the proposed culvert at the northern boundary ,of County have been forwarded to the Main Highways Board for approval. A nine-inch diameter pipe culvert has been put in on the Makerua Hill. Maintenance metal has been put on Toi Toi Street, Tokomaru Township. I have inspected the small bridge at Dalzeil's, ami have to report that the present structure is not strong enough for the loading it is subjected to. lam of opinion that twin five-feet diameter pipes would be sufficient to carry the water. These could be installed under the present bridge. As an alternative, a reinforced concrete culvert could be constructed, but it would be a very difficult matter to deal with.

Wirokiao Maintenance metal has been put on Muhunoa East, Ohau West, Hokio Beach, and Levin-Foxton Roads. Grading has been carried out on various roads in the riding.

Matters at the Koputaroa cottage have been attended to. The tower in the stock bridge, Gladsone Road, has been, strengthened. I have inspected the willows in the stream at the rear of the Ihakara Hali and am of opinion that, as they are on private property, the property-owner should clear same. " The timber bridge near Mr. Broadbelt's house is not suitable for the heavy traffic using the Highway. I would suggest that the present structure be replaced with a concrete culvert of eight-feet span, when finances will allow. Otaki Riding. Bitumen paving has been completed on Bevan's and D'Ath's deviations, also on Otaki bridge to Jubilee Road section. : The River bridge has ben sprayed' with; bitumen; The contractors are making fair, progress with the construction of the Waikawa River bridge. The deck slab of three spans has been constructed. The gravelling of the path in front of the Convenf School has been completed. The drains on the Waikawa' South Road extension referred to by Mr. Selwyn Simcox have been filled in. Te Horo Riding.

General maintenance work has been carried out on the roads in this riding. The grader has been at work on Waikanae Beach and Waimeha Township roads. The necessary .length of culvert has been delivered to Mr. Knight, who has installed same.

Riding Requirements. Cr. Barber said he would like to see a move made in reasonable time with regard to Daly's bridge, as the structure was not strong and the wool season was on. He moved that the County engineer take the matter up with the District Engineer soy that the necessary work could be done. The motion was carried.

Cr. Catley said that some time ago there was some correspondence from Mr. J. H. Mungavin in regard to a drain at the corner of McLeavey Boad, Ohau, which had become dangerous to stock, and certain settlers were called upon to fence it, but this had not been done.

'The chairman: We must insist that something be done. Were they consulted? Cr. Catley: The riding members met them there and discussed it, on the lines stated in our report. The clerk stated that the recommendation of the committee had been forwarded to the settlers concerned. The chairman: We will look into.it and see that it is carried out. Cr. Catley stated that Ohau East Road was becoming rough. The engineer: We arc getting maintenance metal out for it now. It Avill be fixed before Christmas. The report was adopted.
