"BREAKING-UP" CEREMONY.
The annual prize-giving and "break-ing-up" ceremony in connection with' the local school took place on Friday afternoon, when a large number ofparents were present. 'The weather was fine and the ceremony took place out of doors, the children being assembled on the lawn.' The (Mr Mark), in addressing the assemblage, stated that the result of the year's work had been most satisfactory, despite the many changes in the staff. He explained that the reason for presenting certificates l.iis year instead of prizes, Was that in the latter case only one or two uupils were .recognised, but with eer' iicates every child who obtained the -equired- number of marks received n ognition. Referring to the health of the (hildren, he urged the necessity of pupil.-; changing their boots and clothe Avhrn wet, as often wet clothes and feet were the forerunner of T.B. In conclusion he thanked the Committee and parents for the int<>m.t shown by them in school-mat-ters during the year, and expressed his appreciation of the work done oy the sMff. He then called on Mr Hyde, the chairman of the committee, to say a few words. . " Mr Hyde thanked the staff for then care and interest shown in tnc children, and on behalf of the Committee conkimented the on the high percentage'of passes obtained. He expressed res-ret that they were ;to lose the services of JTss Dillon, owing .to the fall-ing-off in the roll number, bringing 'about a re-organisation of the stall. In complimenting the children on their effort, he. said it was gratifying ™ see such a large number qualify tor honour and merit certificates. In view of the considerable amount of si'r.mess during the year it was very satisfactory to see such a good number of attendance certificates obtained. He liope-i that next vear every child wouW quality for a certificate. Addressing Standard VI. boys-and girls, he urged upon thorn, on leaving, school, to have a definite object in view and to strive loi it. In making reference'to dental ennies, he read the letter .received fro". Mr J. Linklater, M.P., stating that tue Shannon School had been made a base for the district and that a nurse had been allocated, which was greeted oy. applause. He then presented the successful scholars with the won by them, at the conclusion oi: which Mr Mark called for three cheers for the committee and parents, whica were heartily given, cheers also being given by the children for the start The singing of the National Anthem by the scholars brought a pleasant, little ccremonv to a close. / AWARDS.
