HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARIES.

MANAWATU WIN .TWO MATCHES OUT OF THREE.

Two cricket teams from Horowhenua took part in the preliminaries in connection with the Hawke Cup, at Palmerston North on Saturday. Manawatu played against these teams, also against a side from Feilding, the object of the games being to enaoie players to further their claims inclusion in the Manawatu eleven to defend’ the Hawke Cup against Hawke's Bay next month. The games were p.ayed ou the. sportsgrounds, and the-w./.vets "weie slow as the result of recent heavy iam. The senior match against lunowhenua resulted in a draw; in the match betweed the B teams, Manawatu were the winners by a margin, of 66 runs. Horowhenua in its game with Manawatu was unlucky insofar as time was concerned, as the batsmen with 133 m hand'for seven wickets, were doing well when stumps were drawn. Manawatu went to the crease first and compiled 215 before declaring witb only seven down.
