“I’ve lost my bike already, I only got it on condition that I didn’t speed,” admitted James Torrens to the Magistrate, Mr E. C. Levvey, in the Christchurch Traffic Court. Torrens appeared on a charge of speeding. “Who made the condition?” asked Mr Levvey. Defendant: My mother. The Magistrate: Your mother is a wise woman. Defendant, who was earning only 30s a week, was fined 20s and costs.
