ENGAGEMENT RINGS.
“SHY" MAN TAKES THREE
NIMBLE POLICEMAN’S CAPTURE,
A man who entered a jeweller's shop in King Street, Sydney, recently to inspect the stock of engagement rings finally decided to take three, valued at more than £BO. He did not, however, pay for them. The man had approached a young woman near the jewellery shop and shyly asked if she would assist him to select an engagement ring for his fiancee. “I do not know much about these things," he said timidly, “and if you would tell me the sort of thing a girl would like as a surprise I would be very grateful." Smilingly, the young woman accompanied him into the shop. Engagement rings in glittering profusion were offered for his selection. “Take them to the door, into the light, and see them sparkle," said the salesman enthusiastically. The young man, fingering three expensive rings, ivent to the door —and then dashed ' into King Street and decamped. The salesman chased the fugitive and was fortunate in attracting the attention of Constable Corrigan, one of the fastest sprinters in the police force. The constable chased the runaway into Pitt Street, to the Imperial Arcade, and then’ back along Pitt Street again. Finally a -young/man was arrested. The three rings werejiound in his possession. The young lady who had accompanied him into the shop was able to establish her bona fides.
