MEETING OF HOROWHENUA . POWER BOARD.

Tho monthly meeting of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board was held at Levin on Tuesday, there being pre- ' sent: Messrs G. A. Monk (chairman), W. E. Barber, T. G. Vincent, R. Bryant, A. E. Hyde, C. Blenkhorn, A. J. Petherick and A. Seifert, Mr P. W. Goldsmith (secretary and treasurer), anil Mr J. A. Smith (engineer). Leave of absence was'granted to Mr E. S. Morse. \vho was suffering from the effects of an accidont, and tho Board expressed a wish for his speedy recovery. LIGHTING SERVICE WANTED.

Mr R. J. Hagan, Otaki, wrote asking to have his residence connected to, the lighting supply. He stated that lie had been waiting for several years and had approached several members, but had got no results. There were other housed in his locality -which also required the current. . The Chairman stated that the Engineer had been looking into this matter, and it was dependent somewhat on what arrangement could be made •with a neighbour of the applicant/The line required was only a .short-one. The application was referred, to the Engineer, with power io act if sufficient revenue is offering. ADDITIONAL LAMP FOR FONTON BEACH. The secretary of the Foxton Harbour Board wrote asking for another street light to be installed at Manawatu Heads, the proposed sii o being in the vicinity of the corner of the Sanatorium and AH Saints’ Children’s Home road. He requested that the matter be treated as one of urgency. - The Engineer stated that the extension required would comprise a couple of spans. He recommended that the work be undertaken. In answer to a question by Mr Barber, the Engineer said he thought that the installation could be made before the holidays. Authority was given to the Engineer to instal the light asked for. TREASURER’S REPORT. Th§ following report by the Treasurer ivas adopted, on the motion of the seconded by Mr Seifert: —

Balance Sheet for Year Ended March 31st, 1929.

Since (he previous meeting of the Board the balance sheet for last year •has come to hand from the Audit Office. There are no alterations; the balance sheet and accompanying accounts are as presented to the Board prior to audit. The certificate of the Controller and Auditor-General reads as follows: “The Audit Office having examined tho balance sheet and accompanying accounts required by law to be audited, hereby certifies them to be correct.” The balance sheet is now available for inspection by, members whenever desired. Cash Takings for October.

The cash takings for the month amounted to £6271, a considerable increase upon the receipts for the same month last year. Of this amount £5707 represents the receipts from electricity sales and includes many of the quarterly accounts. The following table shows in detail how the receipts are made up for the first seven months of the present financial year:— Cash Receipts. October. Tl. 7 mtlis. Accounts. ,-The accounts for the meeting for confirmation amount to £846 ss, .and to be passed for payment £2144 12s. The largest item to be dealt with is that of interest, etc., due to the Government Life Insurance Office in respect to the second £40,000 loan raised from that office. The amount to be paid on Nov. 30th for this obligation is £1356 16s sd.

Accounts chargeable to loan amount to nearly £SOO, the principal items being ' copper wire £206, insulators £7l, meters £57, timber and poles £4B, fuses, etc., £25. The balance of the accounts include many sundries, and amongst them there is the benzine account of £52, the account for building the porch at the depot £25, and the Audit Inspector's charges for the recent audit £53. : " ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer reported as follows for the period since the previous meeting of the Board:— Forty-two now service Hines: have been erected, extra phases run on 10 existing services, one service line extended, 138 poles have been fitted and „ erected, and 098 chains of wire run on E.H.T. and L.T. lines. ■ One outdoor substation has been erected, four street lamps changed to new positions and one extra street lamp erected at Paraparaumu Beach. Chief items of construction for the period are the extension of L.T. off Lady's Mile, Foxton; completion L.T. Kilsby's Road, Koputaroa, and the building of the Makerua-Tane ,linel Extra phases have been run on McDonald Road, Levin; Moana Road, Koromoki Street, Tasman Beach; and street lighting extended to Tasman and Paraparaumu Beaches. A short extension with heavy cable was made from the ' sub-station, Foxton, to supply H. Bor- : ry'a flaxmill. The usual general maintenance has been carried out throughout the whole area, and patrols have been done on the Levin-Foxton and the WailcanaePaekakariki lines and sub-stations. Fifty-eight single-phase meters have been tested, and 16 single-phase and 4

polyphase meters repaired and re-test-ed. The usual maintenance to vehicles has been carried out and one 11,000volt switch panel completed and a quantity of line material made up. During the period power has beer, supplied to 11. Berry's flaxmill, Foxton, where a 40 h.p., 25 h.p., and a 10 h.p. have been installed. Mr Petherick asked if anything had been done with reference to the lighting of the Paraparaumu Domain.

The Engineer stated that the only communication received was in regard to the lighting of the tennis courts. The Board's secretary was obtaining further particulars. Mr Petherick stated that there was talk of amalgamating the sports and lighting the whole ring at night.
