RACING AT LEVIN TO-MORROW
% Big Fields at Annual Fixture. The Acceptances Reviewed.
(By “Silken Rein.”)
With the conclusion of the Otaki meeting interest will now be focussed on the armua l e the Racing Club, Which ds scheduled tc> take place on the Club’s course at Levin to-morrow. - The wesent popular one .with sportsmen on this coast and the pres indications are that this year s gathering will be a highly successful one.
From a numerical point of view the aeeeptanees received are excellent. and the solving of the problems submitted by the handicapper will provide patrons with an interesting day’s 3port. The track which is usually a fast one, will again be in capital order and fine weather is aill that will be needed to assure the success of the fixture.
In the following programme, the figures preceding the name of the runners indicates how each has been placed in the last three starts, since the opening of the 1929-30 season. The mark 1 ds given for a first, 2 for second. 3 for third, 0 for unplaced and (*) not started during the period mentioned.
Following is the programme:—
MAIDEN RACE, of 100 sovs., Six
furlongs.
The list of acceptors exceeds the safety number by five and with one scratching, White Doe, already to hand, the possibilities are that a division will be avoided. There is very little form among the first division but Pari and Tobacco Land are improvers. Perhaps it will be left to — Pari.
Second Division.
Ben Hur, Corneroff and Streamer have the best credentials of the maidens (in the second division and Rasouli is dangerous one. The former ran two particularly good races at Otaki and should not be long now in winning. Streamer was also consistent and with a little luck would be hard to beat. In the event of a one-race contest the one selected in preference to Pari is Streamer, but then he will have to beat — Ben Hur.
MANAKAU HACK HURDLES, of 120
There are eleven due to contest the hurdles, but with Peshwa and probably two or more other unlikely-starters the fieW will be reduced considerably on the day. Otaki form is strongly in favour of Hard Gold and even with his re-han-dicap he looks like being close to the money. Quillfire if he is sent to the post, will be a strong fancy and The Budget who is being regarded as an unlikely starter has the reputation of being a good fencer. Sunart’s win of last year will bring him a little support, but one who is entitled to more is Rash. His form looks the best with the exception of Hard Gold. The favourites will probably be — . Hard Gold. Rash.
WERAROA HACK HANDICAP, of 110 sovs.; seven furlongs. ‘
There was a good deal of merit in Make-Up's win yesterday, and even with the re-handicap lie will probably be favourite on the day. If Elysianor reproduced his first day Otaki form he would be hard to beat, while Dermod's third yesterday entitles him to a good deal of respect. Warzone was confidently supported from the right quarter on Wednesday, but would need to improve on that form to have a winning chance. He did not start yesterday. Arrowhead has been fairly consistent, but un-
likely and may be worth following from now The only other form runners are Footpad and Gold liktf and preference must go to ..the latter for Ins second to Acredity at Masterton. Le Champ at his best would be dangerous, but on from it looks like the prize going to— Make Up. Footpad.
MAKO MAKO HACK HANDICAP,, of 110 sovs.; six furlongs.
Clarendon has been re-liandicapped for his dead heat yesterday, but while form is in his favour the weight lobks against him. Ex Dono, a newcomei, has not accomplished anything to merit outstanding support, but he. should beat more than beats him. Acredity, Dermod, Mariea, Claremore,. Pari and Streamer all have • a certain amount of form to recommend them, but with the exception of the former and Mariea all have other engagements. Dermod may start in this race, however, and must be given a chance. Perhaps on the day the public choice will be— Dermod Mariea.
LEVIN CUP, of 270 sovs.; one mile
The principal handicaps at the fixture has drawn an excellent list of acceptors and a good contest can be expected. The Hawk, Merry Mint and Glare have been re-handicapped, the latter for winning a race at Riccarton. The veteran Martian gelding,' The Hawk, recorded a deserving win yesterday, and the way he accomplished his task has brought him in for serious consideration. in connection with this event. Two popular fancies are Ducllona and Glare, the former perhaps being the most favoured one. In five consecutive starts Duellona has been placed first, second three times and then first at Otaki. That the Paladin filly can stay there is no doubt, but it seems a good deal to expect a horse just emerged from maiden company only three weeks previously to come out and win a Cup race. Nevertheless, her form at Riccarton since her maiden win is convincing and she must be given a chance. At this point it is ill terestiug to, refer to Glare's win, also at Riccarton, in the Hagley Handicap (9 furlongs) saddled with 8.8 he beat Duellona 7.2 by half length and with the weights now at 7.8 and 7.0 respectively he should win again. Among the other runners there is a good deal of form, Talisker, Merry Mint, Royal Game bracket, Moutoa Treasury, Ramescs, Mountain Heath, Roi do Val, and Skyrider all having performances to recommend them and perhaps the-most likely of that collection is Merry Mint and Roi de Val. There will be no less than four runners disputing favouritism and it looks an open race. Two, however, who possess reasonable chances of winning are — The Hawk Glare.
In a moderate field Imateagirl, who has been re-handicapped for her success at Riccarton, will be in big demand on the machine. She is an improved runner, whose future prospects look bright.' Masher is another, who was not raced at Otaki, and he may be a dangerous one. Among those seen
out at Otaki, Kiriana and Banbridge are the pick. The former ridden by 11. Gray on each occasion put up good performances, and will be hard to beat to-morrow. Reed pilotted Banbiidge into third mohey yesterday, but he may not ride the Haw era gelding to-mor-row. With a good pilot aboard, however, he should be worth a saver. The pair with the recommendations are— Imateagirl Kiriana.
McDonald memorial handicap
On Otaki form the open sprint should be a good thing for Veronese. She was certainly beaten yesterday, but that tan be overlooked. The topweight, Goshawk ran an improved race on the opening day and he will have to be kept on the right side from now on. Banket . has his Masterton win as a recommendation, while Dobbin’s form is good enough ..to include him among the possibilities. In this distance Hunting Boy must be given a chance, while Melissa and Moepai will receive support bn their Otaki running. The distance may not be quite far enough for Goshawk, so it is left to — Veronese Dobbin.
HOKIO HACK HANDICAP, of 110 sovs.; five furlongs.
Another division is arranged for the concluding event and four more withdrawals are necessary to avoid a two race contest. Lady Rene lias already been scratched. A.division is not very comforting for those seeking a recovery, but it looks likely that it will be avoided. Public choice in the first division will probably be Just So and Black Acre and preference may be shown 'for — Black Acre.
Acora, Claremore and The Budget-are the form runners and the former will be most demand on the machine. She is a very quick beginner, so it reads like a good thing for her. Certainly it is hard to see past— Acore.
