HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

SOUTHERN DISTRICT MATTERS.

Business relating to the southern portion of the district was dealt with as follows, at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday:— Waikawa South Road Extension. Mr. Solwyn Simeox, Camp Hill, Otaki Railway, wrote stating that he was recently on the Waikawa South Road extension, and noted that nothing had been done towards filling-in the several small drains along the roadside, which were useless with regard to drainage. These drains had cost him several pounds last season, and he was willing to put a man on, with the County roadman, to fill them in, or he would put a man on if the County would pay half. The chairman said he understood, from a previous communication of Mr. Simeox's, that difficulty had been experienced in driving lambs along this road, because of a number of cross drains that were in existence before the building of the road. : Cr. Bryant said he thought that that whs the position. The chairman: W£re they put in for draining the land? Cr. Bryant: I think so. The engineer stated that the job would not be a very big one. He had inspected the position the previous week. On the motion of Cr. Ryder, seconded by Cr. Catley, the matter was referred to the engineer, with power to act. Waimeha Township. A letter was received from Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., relative. to Waimeha seaside township. He stated that he was going to considerable expense in establishing a parking and camping area there for people staying overnight or several days. The land he was using for the purpose fronted Tutore Street, but he was faced with the difficulty that there was a strip of street about 25ft in width between the front boundary of the parking area and the actual street formation, which would probably be filled with cars of day campers, if allowed to park there, and access to his parking area would thus be blocked. He wished to know if the' Council would allow him to use tempor** arily 12 or 15 feet of this strip of street as part of his parking area, thus overcoming the difficulty. In the alternative the same result could be achieved by the Council prohibiting parking on the street in front of' his parking area. There was ample room for day campers elsewhere on Tutere Street and on other streets in the township. ' The chairman stated that he had already intimated to Mr. Field that he did not think it likely that the Council would allow him the use of the 12ft width of road, because they had refused it to the Domain Board, it having been the Council desire to obviate parking on the side suggested by Mr. Field. The chairman added that he did not think the Council should act, hastily by- siaying that they would." prohibit parking in that locality, because hardship might be done. If Mr. Pield was establishing a camping ground and parking place for cars, r would be properly fenced in, and he would probably have more than one inlet or outlet.

At the chairman's suggestion a resolution was passed authorising him to inspeet the locality, in company will Mr. Field, and to report hack to the Council.
