BUCKLEY DRAINAGE BOARD.
At a meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board on Tuesday morning it was resolved to accept the Public Works Department's offer to replace the damaged floodgate and also to leave the other floodgate and the bank from Johnson street to the Manawatu river in good order, on condition that when the bank and floodgate had been put in good order, the Board would undertake the : v future maintenance. With re ference to the bank above Johnston Street the-Department has notified the landowners concerned that it will maintain the banl-s, etc., against erosion due to extra wmter from the Mangahno power house for a period of tw T o years as from Ist July, 1929. At the end of this period the question wall be reviewed, and, possibly, the Board will then be asked to take over the maintenance of a further section of the bank. ,
The Local Bodies Loans Beard forwarder! notification of its sanction iu respect of the loan of £2400 for flood protection in the Board’s district. —The clerk was instructed to obtain the written consent of the ratepayers to the laising of the loan. The Public Works Department wrote stating that frequent complaints had been received from shipping companies using the pert of Foxton as to the number of cabbage trees that had been floating down the river during .times of flood. The Department pointed out that every endeavour must be made by the Board, if cabbage trees were used for protection w-ork, to see that they were made absolutely secure, and if private owners were observed using cabbage trees for protection work iwould be appreciated if the Department could be notified accordingly.
