SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt), and Crs; A. E. Hyde, R. Dovynes, T. C. Tlnvaites, Jas. Curran jun., and S. Anderson. ARMISTICE DAY. A letter Avas received from the Prime Minister asking that suitable arrangements be made for commemorating Armistice Day on 11th November.—Left to the Mayor and Town Clerk to attend to. BRYANT’S SUB-DIVISION. Messrs Innes and Oakley, solicitors. Palmerston North, Avrote asking. the Council’s consent to the sub-division or Bryant’s estate. —Granted. FOXTON-SIIANNON BRIDGE. In reply to a letter from the Council the Public Works Department Avrote stating that the exact amounts to be contributed by the Council in connection Avith the neAV Shannon-Foxton bridge and road deviation at _ the ManaAvatii river rcere not yet definitely knoAvn. WATER SUPPLY TO RAILWAY STATION. The Health Officer reported that he was in communication Avith the Railway Department with reference to the borough water supply being laid on to the raiLvay station and conveniences.—The action of the Inspector was approved. MAINTENANCE OF MAIN HIGHWAY. The estimates for the maintenance of the borough main highways Avere receiv-. ed from the Main HighAvay Board, the Council oeing allocated £IOO fer the Foxton Shannon route and £309 for the North routei, as against £67 and £167 respecthmly for the previous year. —Received. SHEEHAN STREET.
The foreman (F. Haley) reported that the south side of Sheehan Street main highway Avas iioav completed and the shoulder on the north side should be finished in a day or tAvo. The metalling Avas now in progress. GENERAL.
Cr. Downes, chairman of the Road Committee, reported that since last Council meeting another horse has been purchased and the old horse disposed of. —The committee’s action Avas confirmed.
Cr., Curran, jun., reported that a builder had been instructed to proceed Avith the Avork of renoA'ating the building at the Cemetery, but he had not yet made a start with' the work. He asked that the Reserve Committee inspect the buildings at the Domain to ascertain what work is required, such as painting, glazing the AvindoAvs and repairs to the doors. —It Avas decided that the Committee make an inspection on Wednesday morning. A request avus received from the Shannon Cricket Club through . Cr. DoAimos, for the use of a horse for about half an hour tA\uce a week, until such time as they get the grass cut Avell doAvn. Cr. Doaviics stated that the cricketers had gone to a good deal of trouble in fixing tlie mower and ho thought that if a horse was available under the ■‘supervision, of tlie foreman, the I'3quest should be granted.—lt Avas decided that the matter be left in the hands of the foreman.
Attention was drawn by Cr. Anderson to the narrowness of the cutting on the cemetery road, which he sain was only 12 feet wide from bank to bank, with a road width of only 8 feet. He pointed out that it was too narrow for two vehicles to pass and on Monday last there had been a collision between two vehicles. He suggested that if clay was wanted at any time it should ,be- taken. :from there. —It was pointed ; biit that:--the Foxton Borough Council were obtaining clay from Shar-non and it was decided to grant them permission to obtain it from this spot. The: Town Clerk reported that the engineer for the, Public Works Department had called on him and stated that Ire,was :v satisfied.with the work in progress in Sheehan street. Cr. Anderson drew the Council’s attention to the fact that the corners in several of the streets in the borough were very high. He said lie understood that the idea of purchasing the scarifier was to use it to stop this sort of thing. He realised that nothing could be done during the dry weather but he would like them to receive attention when opportunity offered. Cr. Downes said-thatvas soon as the work on Sheehan street was completed they would be given attention. The accounts were then passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
