RACING AT TRENTHAM TO-MORROW.
BIG FIELDS SET PROBLEMS FOR SPECULATORS.
THE ACCEPTANCES REVIEWED.
The Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting which is scheduled to take place at Trentham 10-morrow and Monday will bring together some of the Dominion s best performers, and as this fixture is likely to provide a fail y reliable guide for the metropolitan meeting at Kiccaiton early next month, the racing will be of particulai interest. Both numerically and from a quality point ox view the acceptances received by the Club for the opening day are excellent. In two races the list of acceptors exceeds the safety‘number and a few withdrawals, which in the circumstances look possible, will have to be leceived to avoid divisions.
The most valuable prize on to-mor-row’s programme is that offered for the Wellesley Stakes, a race for two-year-olds, but the event in which the public will show most concern is the Wellington Handicap of 11 furlongs. With the exception of three acceptors, Vertigern, Paitonu and Merry Mint, the runners in that race are all entrants for N.Z. Cup honours, and the contest may have some bearing on the result of the principal handicap of the year. Other important races arc the Wainiu Handicap, one mile; and the Shorts Handicap, 6 furlongs. The present indications are that the track wiil be in first-class order, and likely'to produce fast racing.
In the following programme, the figures preceding the name of the runners indicates liow each has been placed in the last three starts, since the opening the 1929-30 season. The -mark 1 is given for a first, 2 for second, 3 for third, 0 for unplaced and * not started during the period mentioned.
Proceedings will commence with the Glen Hurdles which has the smallest field of the day. By reason of his win at Auckland recently. Elysianor may wind 'up favourite when the machine closes. His previous start to that, produced a second to Prince Lu at Wanganui and he is undoubtedly the form runner but the poundage allotted him is certainly a steadier. Aberfeldy has not raced since the Grand National fixture where he displayed g'ood form which entitles him to respect. . Novar showed improvement in his second run at Wanganui and Trc-s----ham, on the face of his' second at Hawkes Bay looks like winning shortly. Fine Acre has disappointed so many times that the public must be getting tired of him but latest 'reports concerning the Foxton jumper are encouraging enough to give him another chance Pantagruel would be worth suporting if he could repeat last year’s performance but one who makes a stronger appeal among the lesser weights is Peshwa. It is a distance which suits him and with a noticeable improvement in his last gallop' there is reason to expect he will be a dangerous customer with the minimum poundage. Better support, however, is likely to be accorded Elysianor , Fine Acre.
TAITA HANDICAP, of 260 sovs.; 4 furlongs.
The handicap raee for two-year-olds has a good number of untried youngsters among the field and form is not well represented. The top-weight Chief Link, despite the big handicap, will probably be made favourite and his performances at Auckland entitle him to that position. The half-brother to Silvermine is apparently a good class animal ,and if he gets beaten, it will Tje ithe weight that will do it. The other form rur.ners are Manuive who ran third to Princess Betty and Ruby Step at Hawkes Bay; Tray Bond who ran third to Satisfy and Spoon in the
McLean Stakes; Arajean and Gesture who ran third and first respectively in the Mastertoh Nursery handicap. Tray Bond is a chestnut filly by Tea Tray*
Victory Bond and is likely sort, while Arajcan has breeding that points to her being a good two-year-old. The pair with winning performances are entitled to most support and they are Gesture Chief Link.
WAINUI HANDICAP, of 400 sovs.;
The mile race looks like providing a good contest and it bears a fairly open aspect at its present stage. Commendation is a good miler but will be considered in need of the race while Cashier, who is confidently looked to to carry off the N.Z; cup prize, has won in his only start this season and he will be in demand for this race also. Merry Damon is improving and Kick Off, though not perhaps fast enough, is a possibility on his recent form. 'One who will now have to be respected is Panther, a winner at Masterton. Keddar meets him on better terms but at the distance the former should again beat Keddar. Great Charter has a winning bracket as a recommendation while Prickles on Ashburton and Geraldine form, is likely to have a good following. The winner of the principal race at Masterton, Rabbi, is a fairly good sort and if he is allowed to take his place in this field instead of the W.R.C. Handicap, he will take some heading. Admiral Drake is one that may show considerable improvementIt is not an easy race for speculators but in the possible absence of Rabbi, a pair that possess reasonable chances of winning are
Cashier Panther.
There were three acceptors over the safety number in. this event but the early scratchings have avoided a division . Recent form points strongly to the top-weight as he has the same poundage as in his last success, which was over a mile course. King’s Jest has been placed in better company, while Royal Black is likely to win any time now. Zippor is also engaged at Waipukurau on Monday and may be absent from this field. Masher, My Own, Austerity, Royal Opera, Llyn Dhu, Glare and King Acre are all possibilities on recent form. Royal Opera proved at Danncvirke that he will be hard
to beat while Austerity's. performances entitles him to much respect. With big fields there is always a feeling of
uncertainty with the usually confident punter and this is often reflected in the tote receipts. With any luck iu the running, however, a pair that should be hard to beat are Sea Cob Royal Opera.
The chief handicap of the opening day is the race in which the public will be most interested. Had Star Stranger been able to gain a place in the King Emerald Memorial at Auckland it is probable that he would have been a good favourite for this race. His two previous efforts however, saw him placed second, once at Avondale t;c -Piuthair over a mile and a quarter run and later to Historic in the Mitchelson Cup. In the latter event he was beaten only by a neck and with Historic out of the way in this raee he will be hard to beat. The one which was being looked to to account for the Martian gelding was Vertigern, but his withdrawal has upset calculations, especially with* early investors. The stable is now relying on Talisker, who would have been bracketted with Vertigern.. The fact that Talisker is still in the N.Z. Cup field is evidence that his connections expect him to improve to run a distance. He ran fourth iu a mile and a half race won by Vertigem at Trentham early in the year. Prince Humphrey will have to show a big improvement to beat this field. Yoma has a good record for the course but Scatown’s disappointing performances in Australia does not entitle him to much support. Encouraging reports arc, received concerning Hoylako but he may not be ready yet. Paitonu has not raced for some time and is likely to be passed over in favour of Piuthair, whose form at Masterton and Avondale are good enough to give her a chance in this event. She will meet Rabbi on 71b better terms. .In the Shade, Spearmiss, Rabbi aud * Tcficka look most likely of the others. ‘ The former ran a fairly good race at Auckland while the successes of Nightmarch and Phar Lap bring Tcheka into prominence. He is one of Night Raid’s progeny. Vertigern’s . withdrawal has considerably weakened the field and on the form shown it looks like the winner coming from
Star Stranger Piuthair.
WELLESLEY STAKES, of 1000-sovs , for two-vear-olds. Special weights. 5 furlongs. 30 War Worn 1 Satisfy 203 Chrysology 11 Simba 030 Watch Officer 0 Peep DIO Lineage 0 Intruder 00 Nimble 00 Cylinder ' * Open Cheque 00 Oil King 3 Tray Bond * Tenterden 0 Green Linnet 0 Pass On 0 Sporting 'Chance * King Musket * Shambles—Monntoa’s Gift f. * Valley 0 Benign
In this raee for two-year-olds, colts will be weighted at 8.7, geldings 8.4, and fillies 8.2. Simba who won at Wanganui and Hawkes Bay in his only two starts is being claimed to be best of liij age seen out in this season. Royal Ruler is the only other double winner but he has been beaten on one occasion. The Soutli Island filly, Satisfy, has only had one race, the McLean Stakes, which she won and she looks like beir.g a good one. War Worn ran third to Simba and Chrysology at Hawkes Bay while the latter also ran third in the Musket Stakes to Chief Link and Sight Draft. Lineage won the Avondale Stakes in which Watch Officer ran third. Tray Bond is the only other runner with a placed performance, a third to Satisfy and Spoon at Dunedin. Tenterden who has not raced yet was one of the high priced yearling at the last Trentham sales and he is said to be a likely looking youngster. In the speculation, the public will show a decided preference for Simba Satisfy.
sprinters due to line up for the second leg which is undoubtedly an open race. Ability to begin well is in Paganelli’s favour and if he is still as brilliant as he was last year he will be in the money. Silver Paper's credentials need no emphasizing, while the same may be said of the consistent Takanini sprinter, Eaglet. Reremoana must still be considered among the possibilities •though Silvermine will be a more popular fancy. His winning turn is due any time now. Paddon may prefer a longer distance but he will be a dangerous one, nevertheless. Arrow Lad is reported to be in line fettle and ran a good race for a fresh horse at Hawkes Bay. He was similarly placed in the same race last year and then went on to Wellington to beat all but Consent in this event. White Pang, Hunting Cry, Full Mark and Freehold are others who are expected to have a. good followig. The latter, who has not raced this season may be more forward than expected. Paganelli, Silver Paper, Silvermine, Eaglet and Arrow Lad are the most likely ones and with a good marble, a pair that should be hard to beat are Silver Paper Arrow Lad. Aspiring will be coupled with Silver Paper.
High Society and Full Flight are the early scratehings for the concluding race, but three more will be needed to avoid, a division. Form points strongly to Clarendon, who was first and second at Masterton and . was unlucky to be beateii in his second start. Bielifield is a fast one and need only to be at his best to romp home. Juggle is one who should run a good race. King Acre, Auda, Monoloff and Arrowhead are the other form runners. Werata may be better than his Masterton performances- would suggest and Australis is one likely to improve. For the recovery dividend, however, the public may select Clarendon Juggle. - RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. A. G. Murray: Yoma, Merry Peal. J. Barry: Hoylake. T.
