SHANNON TENNIS CLUB.

SEASON OPENED.

Though the morning broke dull on Saturday, the weather cleared by the afternoon and sunshine greeted the Shannon Tennis Club for their official opening. In spite of the Foxton and Levin Clubs holding their opening day on the same afternoon, there was a good attendance of members and friends, vjisitiors being preseutt from Mangaore, Tokomaru and Otalri. The president (Mr E. T. Moody), in welcoming the visitors, said he was pleased to see so many present. The past season, he said, had been a successful one from a playing point of view. Of the five matches played, they had won three. The Club would be in a strong position this year and a challenge would be sent to the Bulls Club to contest the Newman Cup, a-i they seemed to think it was in its permanent possession. It was hoped that the ladder matches would be mire Keenly contested as it was from these results that the teams would be selected. A suggestion had been mad'; by the Manawatu Association asWng if the Clubs would be agreeable to the centre arranging inter-club games, <ach club to select their own team. The local Club had replied agreeing to matches being arranged by the Centre with country clubs only. The Club was the possessor of the pins for seniu' and junior players, which were donated by Messrs 11. Hook and G. Mitchell. A trophy donated by Miss Sinclair for the best lady and gentleman player was won by Mrs T. Moynihan and Mr C. Blackbourn. The same donor had notified the committee of her intiition of presenting a trophy this year for the best junior 16 years and under. The Club's thanks were due to Miss fc'rncla'r for her trophies. Mr Moody then called on, Mrs Moody to play the first ball over the net after which he declared the season open.

The afternoon was spent hi games, after which afternoon tea was served.
