HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL
SOUTHERN DISTRICT MATTERS. At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua Couhty Council; at Levin on Saturday, the following business relating to the southern portion of the district was transacted:— Spoil on Roadside. With reference to slips on the roadside, Mr. J. H. Staples, of Pukehou, Manakau, wrote stating that for some time debris had been taken and tipped along his fences, and quite recently this had thoughtlessly occurred again. One fence, which was once a sevenwire, now' had only four wires showing. He asked that, if necessary, the Works Committee make an inspection, and that consideration would be shown to his boundary fence. The matter was referred to the engineer, with instructions to take what steps were necessary to prevent the practice. Drainage to Pavement. Concerning the damaged pavement at Pukehou, on No. 1 Highway, the result of a motor fire some months ago, the District Engineor (Mr. R. H. P. Ronayne) wrote stating that the Council’s letter on the subject was recently submitted to the Board, who had now stated that they had decided not to take any further action in the matter. The chairman stated that the High ways Board had suggested that the Council should take action, and the Council had suggested that, as it might be termed a test case, the Board should assist on the maintenance siibr sidy basis. This was how they had received that request. If the Council would refer the matter to himself, he would take it up with the Board and ask them what the future position was with regard to it. The* Board had to find two-thirds of the -cost of repairing the damage. On the motion of Cr. Ryder, seconded by Cr. Colquhoun, the matter was left in the hands of the chairman. Application for Culvert Pipes. Mr. R. H. Knight, Te Horo, wrote stating that he found 1 it difficult to negotiate with safety the entrance to his property facing Mangaorie Road, owing to the insufficient width of the culvert outside his gate, and he wished to apply for an additional six pipes to widen the culvert.
The request was referred to the engineer, with power to act. Highway Through Otaki Borough.
A letter was received from Mr. W. J. Barlow, garage proprietor, Otaki Railway, drawing attention to the state of the Main Highway in that locality. He stated that, owing, to metalling by way of repairs from time to time, the road had been raised above its former level, with the result that water drained into certain properties adjoining it. He asked if the Council would look into the matter before the bitumen was laid, as it would be too late then to seek a remedy. The- chairman said that the letter did not concern this Council, who were simply carrying out the plans of the Highways Board. It concerned either the Board or the Otaki Borough Council. He moved that Mr. Barlow be advised to make his protest to the Borough Council as the controlling authority, or to the Board.
Replying to a question by Gr. Jensen, the chairman said that the Board would have to find some means of draining the road; they could not tear
it up. The motion was carried. Waimeha, Lighting.
With regard to the Waimeha Domain Board’s application for township lighting, the engineer reported as follows: — “I have diseussed the matter of lights at Waimeha Township with the engineer to the Power Board,, and have to advise you that a light at the western end of Rauparaha Street would be approximately £l2 10s, providing a resident would undertake to switch the light on and off. To install another light at the eastern end of the street, the cost of the two would be approximately £45. ’ ’ On the recommendation of the Works Committee, it was decided that no action be taken.
