ROADS FOR C.D. FARM SETTLEMENT.

0 TO BE HANDED OVER TO COUNTY WHEN COMPLETED. LIABILITY FOR MAINTENANCE METAL UNSETTLED.

A communication was received by the HoroAvhenua County Council on Saturday from Mr A R. Acheson, Assistant Engineer, Public Works Department, Palmerston North, stating that he had been requested by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wellington, to ask the Council to take over control of those roads on the C.D. Farm Settlement which have already been formed and metalled; the Council to take control from November Ist. He had made an inspection of the roads referred to, Avith the County Engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewster), on October 3rd, and agreed to carry out certain extra works to bring the neAv road up to County standards. The extra work consisted of further napping of the metal and trimming of shoulders and an alteration of one culvert.

In reply te a letter .from the County Engineer, Mr Acheson wrote stating he noted that the Council required extra gravel on the existing roads. It had been agreed that the roads were satisfactory, provided that extra napping Avas done, also some trimming of shoulders and an alteration to one culvert. The existing road had eight inches of consolidated metal and quite a fair surface. The Department had patched the potholes, and the patching material would be further napped and scraped in. He Avas not sure that the Lands Department should be required to supply maintenance metal for the remainder of the year, and would have to refer this further request to the Commissioner for his opinion. • The roads ultimately to to taken over by the Council will comprise the present one leading in from the Beach Road, its continuation (yet to be made); to junction Avith the Buller Road, and four roads (one a new road) giving access to the section in the western portion of the settlement. The Chairman (Mr G. A. Monk) moved that ‘he matter of the C.D. Farm roads be left in the hands of the Coun-, ty Engineer, Avho had to give t&e final certificate. He remarked that the question of maintenance metal, to keep them in order, Avas one for consideration. Cr. Ryder seconded the motion. He stated that Mr Brewster had trfken the Works Committee over the roads anl pointed out AA r hat was necessary, and the Committee had agreed to it. The motion was carried.
