The clerk of the Buckley Drainage Board (Mf J. T. Bovis) wrote stating that it was some years since the drain between the railway line and Buck ey Road from the Buckley Stream, north, towards the Shannon Borough had received attention, and: the Board would appreciate the Council’s action in having the drain cleaned out.-—The matter was referred to Cr. Barber and the Engineer, with power to act. ROAD AT LINTON. Mr S. Hill, Tokomaru, wrote asking if he could have the read into his farm attended to, as it was in a bad tt'ii Tfhc Chairman stated that Mr Hul had purchased a section from Mr G. Craw, and the road was immediately behind the Tokcmaru station. Gr. Whyte said that the road was all right exccnt for grass and some holes, and Ihe work required was m the nature of patching. ' The application was referred to the Engineer with power to act. MR CRAW’S ROAD.
A -report was received from the eommittee appointed to inquire into Mi G. Craw’s request for road improvement at Linton. They stated that they had mot Mr L. Craw, representing the applicant, and he had expressed himself satisfied with the state of the road at Section 4, on top of the bank from Hume's Road to the gate. He desired that some foramtion work be done on top- of the bank bounded by Sections, 47 and 50. This apparently not being a legalised road, the committee had no recommendation to nxfllcfit' The Chairman mentioned that the previous! request was fo-r the improvement of the road from Hume ’3 Road to the property. The report was adopted. GRANT FOR HEIGHTS ROAD EXTENSION.
Notification was received from the Public Works Department that a free grant of £4O was .authorised to be expended on Heights Road Extension. Several councillors seemed surprised by the grant and expressed doubt ,as to the locality for which it was intended. Cr. Gimblett, said that at one time Heights Road and Gladstone Road ■were meant to be linked up, but this bad not been done. ' The Chairman: This is not all that it looks: there are plans and specifications to prepare. Replying, to Cr. Catley, the Chairmah stated that the cost of the plans could not be taken out of the grant. Cr. Catley stated that there was a little work on the Heights Road that wanted doing urgently. He believed that £SO spent on the unformed part would make a decent road on Ihe boundary, and would relieve Mr Law’s place of traffic which cut it up a good deal. He thought that the unexpended balance of ithe Council’s grant would effect what he would like to see and enable the settlers to get in and out on their own road. The Engineer stated that the unexpended ' balance to the end of last month was £56. The Chairman said there would be some expense to the- riding by way of administration, in regard to the Govt rument grant. It was for the Council to decide whether it would take up the £4O; it would be a bad policy to turn it down. On the motion of Cr. Ryder, seconded by Or. Gimblett, it was resolved that the Council accept the grant. iCr. Gimblett observed that it would be necessary to settle whether the grant belong to the Wirokino or tlm Tokomaru ridir.g; apparently it was intended for the top of the hill. SURFACEMAN’S COTTAGE.
A request was received from Mr .T P. Finlayson, surfaceman, Kcputaroa, for the installation of a bath in his dwelling. He also asked if the Council had a plan of the section, as he had (procured posts for the purpose of putting in a fence and wished to know if the boundary fence between this section and Mr Gay 's was on the right, time.
■The request for the installation of a bath was granted, and the'question, of. the section boundary was referred to the Engineer. BEQUEST FOR CULVERT. (Mrs A. M. Bradfield wrote asking to be provided with a new 22ft. culvert at the main entrance to her property at Ihakara, the present culvert having rotted away. She added that the matter had already been discussed with the Engineer. A recommendation was made by the Engineer that the Council authorise the replacement. He stated that the present culvert was on the side of the Main Highway, which would be widened to pavement width at some time, and the new culvert should be nearer Mrs Bradfield's.
The request was granted, and the details were left to Ihe Engineer.
OHAU WATER RACE. On the recommendation of the Works Committee, the Council adopted the report of the special committee set up to investigate the complaint by Mr J. H. Mungavin, ofi Ohau, as to a dangerous water-race at the corner of McLeavey's Road. The special committee reported that they found that the water-race on the road had been partly blocked and the part below the block lowered s so ais to give sufficient fall-to operate two rams-for the purpose of supplying water to the properties of Messrs Aplin and Gayne,
which were on opposite sides of the road at this point. Both these gentle men stated that there rams were installed in the drain when they acquired their properties. They were unable to say whether any permission had been given by the local authority for their installation. Taking into consideration two things —(1) That it was of vital importance to the properties affected that the rams be allowed t) stay there, and (2) that the drain where the rams were installed was about ten feet deep and of some danger to stock being driven along the Toad —the committee recommended that Messrs Aplin and Gayne be asked to erect a fence along the drain at this point; the work to be done to 'the satisfaction of the Engineer.,
