EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.

SOME CLAIMANTS ARE TOO AGGKESSIVE. The experience of the Central Earthquake Belief Committee, in connection with the applications that have been received for financial assistance from earthquake sufferers, is that some of the claimants are too aggressive ■in pushing their claims, while others are not sufficiently so. A statement to this effect was mads bv the Mayor of Christchurch (the Rev. J. K. Archer) on u. u return from Wellington, where he attended a meeting .of the committee in the Prime Minister's office.

"A great deal of the time tf the meeting," said the Mayor, "was spent in considering the question of allocating the money available for relief, but on the whole it was found that it is going to be much moie difficult to distribute the money than it was to raise it, because human nature is so constituted that some claimants are too aggressive in pushing their claims, white others are not .sufficiently so.

"Moreover, in spite of several-no-tices regarding the latest date at which claims "were io lc received, many claims have still to be presented. We know that they exist bu.t they a-e not in our possession, consequently nothing in the nature of a final distribution can yet be attempted. The present arrangement is that the committee is to meet again in a fortnight's time." The Mayer added that what _he thought would happen.was that claims which had been presented and h.id the approval of the local committees would be cleared out of the way, arc! a commission then set up to investigate claims concerning which there wore differences of poinion.
