WOMEN IN THE AIR
FLYING IN AUSTRALIA. MRS. TERRY'S AEROPLANE. SYDNEY, Aug! 23. The first Sydney airwoman to owi. her own aeroplane is Mrs. Terry,-whose imported machine reached Sydney •, day or two ago. Enthusiastic motorist and surf-bath or, as well as flier, Mrs Terry is of a shmncss of physique which might lea one unacquainted with the art of thing to doubt her ability to handle tli. controls of a big machine in the aii Most of Sydney's airwomen, as a matter of fact, are of small stature, an this, curiously enough, aplies, it is sail! to most of the world 's fairl fliers. The latest of Sydney's women ti merge successfully from the course o; •ying instruction, Miss Deaton, is onh i'slip of a girl. She left college but t vear or two back. The smallness o! itaturo of most of Sydney's airwomen contrasts strikingly with the giant pro portions of sonic of its airmen. Tlt 'ate Mr. Neil'Stewart, as one illustru tion, was a young giant in weight ant! in height. Flying, of course, is not a question of avoirdupois, but a question of air sense and flying instinct, cool nerves to meet any emergency, and lightness of touch at the controls. The fact that no women are taking part in the big cross-continent flight from Sydney to Perth next month is a little surprising, for in Sydney alone there are several resourceful women fliers easily capable of making the journey, which will be in such short stages' as to eliminate any unusual hazards. Among the starters will be Captain Hugh Grosvenor, A.D.C. to the Governor of South Australia. It was this daring young flier who, in a flight round Australia, narrowly missed find [ ing Moir and Owen when he went out f of" his way to search for them.
