SHANNON DAIRY CO.
TO ERECT UP-TO-DATE FACTORY.
• For some time past it has been evident to the directors of the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., that they would have to take steps to either enlarge the present factory, or rebuild to cope with the ever-increasing supply of cream. Undoubtedly the present building and plant has had its clay and to keep abreast with up-to-date dairy factories in the Dominion it is realised that a new factory on modern lines will have to be erected. A special meeting of directors was held on Thursday last to discuss ways and means to cany out the undertaking. Mr. Allen Cave, architect, Hamilton, who has already been connected with the construction "'of many modern factories in the Dominion, attended the meeting, and submitted ideas regarding the construction of a factory to meet the requirements of this district. .■,,'. After a lengthy discussion, including a perusal of the plans of the Golden Bay factory just. completed, which is considered to be one of the most uptefcdate in the Dominion, it was decided to build on similar 1 lines; and in furtherance of this decision Mr J. Aim (manager), accompanied by Mr W. E. Barber, oiu; of the directors, proceeded to Colifngwood yesterday, where, together with the Government dairy instructor of that district, they will view the Golden Bay factory and report to the directors.
An ideal site already belonging to the company, situated between the company's store arid the buttermakdr's residence, i. sto be wscd. Tentative plans are being drawn up which will give the company's shareholders a building able to cope with tn output of 1500 tons and upwards. The building is to be of concrete with windows that will give a light and airy interior. The whole structure will embody the latest improvements now in vogue in. the nio3t modern factories. To give an idea of the growth of the industry in this district the output of butter in 1914 was 265 tons aa compared with a total of 933 tons manufactured last season. In other words there has been an increase of 668 tona in 15 years. With good conditions prevailing and the increased number of new farms coming into existence, flic 1000-ton mark should be reached this season.
-.The erection of the new factory marks another milestone in the advancement of the industry in this district and when constructed it Bhould be a monument to the prosperity of the district, thus placing Shannon amongst the ranks of show factories in the Dominion.
