Last-Minute Win for Manawhenua Fifteen CLEVER RUGBY AT ATHLETIC PARK. WELLINGTON SECONDS BEATEN BY 24—20. There was a slight northerly wind .blowing at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon when Wellington's second team nut Manawhenua. The attendance was larger than had generally been anticipated and the ground was firm. The teams were:— Manawhenua: Johnson, Strange, Fletcher, Walker, Riddell, Akuira, W. Parata, T. Parata, Fitzgerald, Satherlcy, Tatana (captain), Conrad, Miles, Crawford, Summers.
Wellington: Jarman, Pelham, Chaney Murray, Tuck, Sharp, Leys, Shearer (captain), Edgar, Graham, Cave, Fell Ward, Mollier, Coulston. Kef croc: Mr J. Moffitt.
Manawhenua kicked off from the southern end facing the wind and sun. Play went into Manawhenua 's territory until W. Parata marked, finding the line at half-way. Faulty handling by Tuck let Manawhenua take play downiield and, T. Parata started a good passing rush which wenl to Fletcher. Tuck upset him just, as ht was tranferring it to Strange. Immediately following this, Pelham. sent away by Chaney. He made a slick run and then centred. The &11 back endeavoured to take a mark but' missed. A free kick was awarded just before two Wellington forwards j dived on the ball and Manawhenua cleared. It was a narrow escape. In a mix-up, Summers had an eye knocked and left the field. He was replaced by Boldt. .' Pelham was nearly across after some in-and-out passing, but Mana whenua forced. Leys missed a high puht from Johnson and play returned into Wellington's twenty-five. T. Parata started a dribbling rush and then handed to Walker, who dashed down the line before being upset. Biddell lost a try by hanging on too long when two others were handy. From a scrum near the Wellington line, a free kick was awarded, enabling Wellington to clear. -Continued pressure on the Wellington line saw . Jarmai: forced to mark. For not putting the ball in fairly, Wellington suffered a penalty, and Fletcher 'found the posts. —Manawhenua 3; Wellington 0. Shearer, Mollicr and Murray were associated in a nice passing rush which culminated, Murray goim: across five yards from the corner. Pelham's kick hit the outside of the cross-bar. —Three all. A merry mix-up ensued on the Manawhenua line and, from a scramble, Fell picked up and dived across. —Wellington 6; Manawhenua 3. From a scrum in midlield, Wellington broke away and Cave was nearly over. A minute later, the ball travelled >to Murray, who evaded a flyinj: tackle and went across. Shearer converted. —Wellington 11; Manawhenu:. 3. Midlield play followed for souk times until'Tatana put the ball ou near the Wellington line. Eventually the ball came downfield where Shearer made a good opening for Fell, wh< ran dow,nficld before passing to Coul ston, who scored in the corner. Wellington was lia'vii'g the better of die play, but Manawheiuia kept making determined assaults on Wellington 's line. A lucky kick by Jarnian bounced out near the corner. LeysCried to dummy his way through from the line-out, but found the pack too big. Pelham received a poor ' pass from Chancy and sold a dummy before in-passing to Chancy, wiio threw the ball forward. Wellington was almost over again when Pelham and Chaney combined with another movement. Just on half-time, Chaney received from the scrum after the ball passed through the chain of backs and scored near the .posts. Shearer missed an easy one.—Wellington 17; Manawhenua 3. Second spell.
From the kick-off, the ball was thrown about with abandon and long kicks were featured. Manawhenua pressed hard and Walker was nearly over, Jarman failing to clear. A free kick eventually relieved Wellington. Riddell kicked through and had a race with Murray, but the latter managed to get a kick in and put the ball out. Tuck' broke away but the ball came back and Wellington conceded a fiveyard scrum for carrying behind. Manawhenua hooked and as quick as lightning Parata sent it to Strange, who raced across. cured from *a scrum over halfway and; Leys endeavoured to go on his own. W. Parata tackled him and Leys fell; with a shriek of pain. After receiving ambulance attention ho resumed. Wellington received a free kick when.a Manawhenua forward held on to the ball too long, but'Shearer missed in his attempt to goal.' Walker threw a long throw-in to T. Parata, who raced downfield for 40' yards -before being tackled by Jarman. The same movement, was repeated a few moments later but .Murray was tackled when near .the line and the Manawhenua forwards. cleared. . Wellington continued to attack, the backs showing to advantage. T. Parata was playing a great game around the scrum for Manawhenua and Johnson was safe at full back. Walker raced downfield until his toe was tipped. He threw out a pass to Conrad, who went over when tackled. Manawhenua took a speculator and Walker and Fitzgerald chased it in company with Pelham- and Jarman. They arrived together. - and Walker mishandled. Quick as a flash Fitzgerald grabbed it and scored. Endeavouring to keep the play tight Wellington was penalised for holding the ball. Akuira had , a good shot. Walker followed up fast and nearly beat the Wellington man who was taking his time about forcing down. A free kick brought relief to. Wellington. Strange raced away again but was forced out in the corner. With a ■' minute to go W.Parata secured possession but could make no .headway. He threw the ball back to T. Parata, who found himself in a similar position. Johnson, the full back, was handy, so Parata throw the ball to him and the full back ran through the Wellington pack and handed to Fitzgerald, who scored the winning try- made no mistake with the kick, and time sounded:— Manawhenua 24; Wellington 20.
