EVOLUTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —It is A 1 source of congratulation and relief to find a learned and highly placed churchman who is sufficiently courageous and honest to tell the people the truth about the slow evolvement of all things, including man, from the lower forms of life. A very slight acquaintance with the great sources of knowledge, geology, botany, biology, and astronomy, shows us that they combine to put this conclusion beyond a doubt. The "Various old Jewish writers of the first books of the Bible, ignor- - ant men, of a half saxage race, wrote what they thought true legends of their imagination But these, fables cannot detract from the,-fine teachings and noble sentiments Qf some of the other books. Sixty years ago,, "it was thought that Moses ,wass responsible for the iirst books of the Bible, but Bishop Colenso, in his masterly work "The Mistakes of Moses," refuted that belief. The idea given of the Deity, in these earliW books is mean, repulsive and insulting in the extreme. He is exhibited as possessing the most degraded attributes of humanity. He \ is represented as cruel, vindictive, jealous,'approving of lies and deceit, .and —ludicrous if it were.not so shocking —fond of the smell of roast beef! This god of the imagination of thtise old Jews gave his blessing and sanction to the scoundrel Jacob, who deceived his old ,blind father, and cheated his brother of his inheritance. Can. we date to confuse this tribal god of the Jews with tli at Magnificence which rolls, not only this tiny speck of stardust which we call our universe, but uncounted millions of universes far be-, yond our ken, and rolls them through space to the millionth.part of a second? Those who would follow the majestic . march of all things through the ages of the past, should get Well's "History of the World,"'whieh may be obtained in inexpensive numbers from any bookseller. They will find it absolutely dependable, founded on the highest au- , thorities and interesting and readable by all. —I am, etc., ' 'Magna est Veritas et prevalent.''
