VALEDICTORY.

A large attendance of parishioners and friends including a large number ffem Mangaore, assembled at the Parish Hall on Friday evening, when «. farewell social was given to Rer. A. J. Farnell and Mrs Farnell, who are taking their departure from th* district. The evening was devoted to dancing, interspersed with vocal, elocutionary and instrumental items, contributed by Miss Jose Thomson, cello solo; Miss S. Quarrie, solo; Mr L. Milner, monologue; Mr Bovis, humorous stories; Miss Annesley, Irish Jig; Miss V. Quarrie, recitation; Mr Pat Cole, song. The accompaniments were played by Mrs 11. Clifford Jones and Miss M. Ingley. The items were much apprecialed and a jolly time was spent by all. - -t At an opportune time during the evening, Mr Hallam, oh behalf of the ; Vestry and parishioners of Yen. Bede’s Church," in a brief speech wished the • departing guests every happiness in their new home, pointing out that the Rev. Mr Farnell was the second Anglican minister to go from Shannon to Opunake. As a. token of the esteem in which he was held by the parishioners, he asked Mr Farnell to accept a handsome walnut writing desk, which carried with it the best wishes of all.

The Rev. Mr Farnell very heartily returned thanks. He asked them to rally round the new Vicar and give him their support and not wait until he was leaving them. Anything he had done had been for the welfare of the church. As a result of the concert held during the week lie would be able to hand over the Sunday School free of debt. In conclusion he heartily . thanked all who had helped him in* any way. A very nice supper was served by tho ladies, the function being brought to a close with cheers for the depart- >■ ing guests and the singing »of * f Auld_ Lang Syne.” , ‘
