RACING AT DANNEVIRKE.
SPRING MEETING TO-MORROW. THE FIELDS .REVIEWED. (By Silken Rein). Interest in the racing world to-mor-row will be centred round the spring meeting of the Dannevirke Racing ' Club. The fixture, which will be fol : lowed on Thursday by the annual meeting, of the Dannevirke Hunt Club, has drawn good acceptances and there is every reason to believe that the gathering will be a successful one, as the class of runners engaged is, sufficiently good enough ,to make for interesting racing. 11 45 ~ G ' len S Jarr y Hurdies ' Fourteen runners are due to face the starter in the opening event and the topweight, Powhiri, does not make a very strong appeal with 11.2. Royal Damon, if he has taken kindly to the .game, should make a welcome addition to the ranks but Qie has not shown much promise of going a distance. Oh , that account he will be passed aside until he has proved himself. A likely sort is Lady Gay, who ran a very good race into fourth place on the concluding day at Trentham. She may be in need of the race, but her form is good enough to earn support. Royal Elm fell in his outing on Saturday and Lieut. 'Bill ran third in poor company. Peshwa will find most friends of the remaining runners. Now that' he has struck winning form there is every reason to believe that he will go on with it. Delude and Ironic are possibilities, but most support will be found for - Peshwa Lady Glay. 12 30 ~~ Tira * u Maiden « There is a big field due to line up . in this event and it may be necessary to run the race in two divisions. Kotahi Eka, who ran third at Trentham, phould be hard to beat in thi s field. He is a fast gelding over a short course. Air Laddie and Arrowzono are two who should also run well. They, were placed in that order behind Last Mark and Roundelay in the Novice Handicap on the last day at the recent Treutham fixture. Duellona's consistent - but unlucky performances during the past season will earn her much respect. There may be a surprise coming from some of the "unknowns" but backers will prefer to ! • stick to I KotaM Eka Air Laddie. 115 —Neagle Handicap. The principal fiat race at the fixturehas not a 'very good field, but there is sufficient to provide an interesting race. Black Mint who was responsible for two fourths at the Grand National meeting, is to have the services of A. E. Ellis and may be elected favour- i ate on the day. Queen's Choice has form that has to be respected, but he does not read as well as Courageous. The latter ran a very good race into second money at Riccarton on the middle day. Beaumont has no recent form to bring him into favour and Kawhakina may need the race. Of the pair the latter appeals most. A race like this should suit Perle de Leon and this race has been won previously by a ' f hurdler. Essential and Revel will be at a good price. Perle de Leon should get some of the money, but for the best portion, he has to beat Courageous Black Mint. 2 0 —Umutaoroa Handicap.
A number of the acceptors for this race are also engaged'later in the' day and the actual starters are not available. Black Make is a useful hack, but may not find as much favour as the recent winner, Royal Lineage. The latter is a fairly good sort and the •race on Saturday will do him a lot of good. The runner-up, Claremore, is also due to take a place in the field and though he only emerged from maiden class at Gisborne, he is apparently a likely hack. Bold Front has the benefit of winter racing and should run a good race. The three-year-olds, Admiral Drake and Ex Dono, will be supported from the form of last season, but one who is entitled to more consideration is Sylvan Dell, who has been racing well in open company Austerity is a-runner who will get on the winning list shortly. The race is fairly open at its present stage, but two who appeal aie Sylvan Dell Royal Lineage. 2 45 —Dannevirke Steeplechase. A field of twelve is promised for the steeplechase event, with the head of the list with 11.2. The San Fran gelding has not done too well recently, but the public elected him favourite at Hawkes Bay and he finished out of a place. Crishna lost his rider in the same race, but he is an improver who should see better days. Ponjola and Woden, first and second in the 118. event, will be able to fight the battle over again and as both have .been consistent of late, they will probably be the favoured pair when the machine closes. A new-comer in Olympic may be a tough proposition and he has Saturday's form as a recommendation, while Revel if he produces his best, will be hard to dispose of. There is very little to recommend the others, the best of which may be Law's Road. Speculators will probably leave it to Ponjola "Woden. o q n —President' s Handicap. Hopwood is undoubtedly the best haek in ta» field, but the possibilifiei
are that 10.12 may stop him. King Quex with the advantage should beat him and a third on Saturday is a recommendation for the latter. Claren ere, Balloon and Bold Front have ether engagements, but if started in tlis race, will find some support. King Manu will win soon and Vinella has t\ery reason to claim a share of support. The daughter of Warplane has not had the best of luck with her in earlier outings and with a little bit of it on her side, she will beat more than beats her. It is a fairly difficult race to sum up at its present stage, but a pair .who will make their presence felt in the field are 'King Quex Vinella. « 4 15 —Ruahine Handicap. Fifteen have fully paid up for the open handicap and for the speculator, there is very little recent form to work on. The three on the top of the list will be considered to be in need of the run, while in the case of Dobbin, he usually race.s best when fresh. Shortly has the benefit of winter racing on his side and that will be useful over the last bit. Huikai wins occasionally and Royal Acre is said to be in good order. On the minimum mark Plimmerton, Tall Timber and Essential are possibilities, with a preference for the latter if he is reserved. The favourites on the day may be Shortly Dobbin. 4 55 —Harris Hack Handicap. It is not a very good lot carded to compete the concluding event and five have earlier engagements. Royal Black, Goodwill, Bold Front, Balloon, Chopin and Abisogne have form in their favour and the best of these may prove to be Royal Black Bold Front.
