HIS MASTER'S VOICE.

The "Trout" Quintet. 'Wilhelm Backhaus (pianoforte) and International String Quartet (Mangeot violin, Howard viola, Withers 'cello, Hobday double-bass), in "The Trout Quintet," Op. 114 (Schubert). H.M.V. DI4S4-87. Schubert's "Trout" Quintet is written as a quintet for pianoforte and strings, the strings consisting of violin-, viola, 'cello, and (instead of the more usual second violin), double-bass. The music lover should find something of rare value in these records. A Frlank Crumit Record-Breaker. Frank Crumit (comedian), in "A Gay Caballero" (P. Crumit); Helen Kane (comedienne), "Is There Anything Wrong in That?" (H.M.V. EA 453). Frank Crumit's "A C4ay Caballero" is one of the biggest hits of 1929. On the reverse side Helen Kane, a clever comedienne, makes his debut, and a decided hit, for H.M.V. Beethoven's Lovely "Spring Sonata" "In Beethoven's sonata in F Major (the "Spring Sonata"), the Viennese violinist Erica Morini is excellent. The sonata suggests the brightness of Nature's reawakening after winter. The allegro opens with a beautiful theme, given on the violin, repeated by the piano. The adagio molto expressivo begins -with a fragmentary repetition of the allegro theme. The movement is beautiful and melodious. The scherzo is' short and brilliant. The allegro ma non troppo is in rondo form and proves a delightful and fitting conclusion to the sonata, (H.M.V.) Belautiful Duets. The two London musical comedy stars Winnie Melville (soprano) and Derek Oldham (tenor) have added another disc of duets to their list. Their latest numbers are "Love's Dream," an arrangement of Liszt's beautiful "Liebestraum," and "The Old Sweet Song," au arrangement of Kreisler's exquisite "Calprice Viennoi;*." Tthe blend of two sweet voices is admirable and they sing with a sincere appreciation of" both sentiment and melody. The pianoforte accompaniment is very clear. (H.M.V., 82937). . Negro Spirituals Now Popular.

Marion Anderson (contralto), l in "Deep River" and "Heav'n, I'Got a Bobe" (negro spiritual) (Burleigh). H.M.V. 82828.

Negro spirituals, as the result of tli3 "Show Boat" and Paul Robeson's artistry, are now very popular. This record marks the debut on records of a singer with a really lovely voice. Combined with the, wonderful voice is an unusual degree of artistry. Also, we have Paul Robeson (bass) and Lawrence Brown (tenor) in "Hear, do Lamb's a-crying" and " Ezekiel Saw do Wheel" (arr. Lawrence Brown). H.M.V. 82838. Paul Robeson makes you realise the nature of the negro spiritual; that it is a sincere outpouring of emotions as deep or deeper perhaps than human nature itself.
