SPORTING.

(By "Silken Rein.")

A Good Tfiree-Year-Old. A three-year-old who is being looked to to hold his own this season with others of his age is Roundelay. He has furnished into a commanding-looking animal and is making good progress in his work. With the benefit of winter racing the son of Limond should be well forward for the Spring racing and should be cherry ripe when the (classic engagements come round. Back at Work. < Blimp is in work again at Awapuni and is said to be much benefited by his spell. Though not an outstanding performer during the past season, the son o'f Gasbng was able to pay his way and may prove a better proposition as e, five-year-old. He is being prepared for the early spring meetings and may be seen out at Marton next month. Pakuranga Hunt Meeting.

The annual one-day meeting of the Pakuranga Hunt Club to be held tomorrow marks the opening of the racing season m the Auckland province. The following runners are expectedto run prominently in their respective to-morrow: — 'Greenmount Steeples: Town Rambler. Harris Hurdles: Master Roley, Archangel. Sylvia Park Handicap: Ankitoa, Arihana. Jellicoe Handicap: High Pitch, Thursby. Pakuranga Steeples: Odin, lowi Rambler. Auckland Handicap: Maori Boy, Justify- „ Ladies' Bracelet: Pompeius. Dunedin Handicap: Gold Money, Mark Mint.

Form at Hawke's Bay. Rivcrslea Hurdles: Lieut. Bill, Sunart. Park Hurdles: Jen, Peshwa. Okawa Maiden: Curtsey, Havana. , 118. Steeples: Ponjola, Woden. ; Abbotsford Handicap: Kaiti, Sly van Dell. Sour.tra Hunters' Flat: Fall <■' tlio Year, Acred. Horomi Handicap: Last Mark, King Manu. Mark Mint Sold. It is reported that Mark Mint, who won a double at Trentham in July, has been sold to go to_ Australia, the purchase price being £SOO. Deserved a Win. Though Red Fuchsia paid a nice double figure dividend at Riccartrfn on Saturday, his win would be popular, for Mrs Alan McDonald's horses had not had the best of luck at the meeting, and it was the first and only win for the stable Winter Cup Winner Historic, the Winter Cup winner, is a brother to Tarlcton, but seems certain to take a much higher rank than that rather customer. Like Tarleton, Historic is a big-framed horse, well up to weight, and as he stays rather well, he may win mor<? good races this season. May Do Better.

Great Lady went a fair race in the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton, but failed to see the journey out. The daughter of Bisogne has plenty of speed and though she failed to get on the winning list at Riccarton she may pick up a hack sprint race on the coast. Nearly Misse^.

Thought Aurora Borealis only won by a very narrow margin on Saturday last, the winning performance was a good deal better than it appeared for her pilot, "Morrie" Nicol lost an iron at the last fence. He managed, however, to get his .mount up to beat the fast finishing Gala Day, but the loss of the iron, apart from the handicap at the critical stage, nearly cost him the race at the scales. He had to take advantage of his full short allowance to draw the weight. Kotahi Eka. Kotahi Eka, who was made a warm favourite in the concluding race at Trentham only to be beaten by the going into third place, is very fast over a short course and should scon make amends for that failure. A race which should suit the Otaki geldling is the Tiratu Maiden stakes or the Takapau Novico Stakes at the Dannevirke meetings on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Good Performers at Marten. The Marton Jockey Club's spring

meeting, which will be held on September 4th and sth, wili again see the 7.0 minimum in operation. If the minations furnish any sort of a guide, there is every reason to believe that the fixture will prove highly successful. High class performers _ are well represented among the entries, the Railway Handicap, 6 furlongs and 27 yards, being a notable race, the promised runners being: Rapine, Star Stranger, Reremoana, Prince Humphrey, Commendation, Staghunter, Star Area, Panther, Ea/jlet, Hopwiood, Gtlenstar, Bonogne, Moutoa Treasury, Blimp, Dobbin, Maui, Spearmiss, Royal Game, Oratioia. Dislikes New Surroundings.

Unless he mends his ways the New Zealand hurdler Home Made, who joined A. B. Cowell's team after his arrival in Sydney recently, will be known as a "home-wrecker" (says a Sydney writer). The trip across the Tasmaa evidently upset 'him, as he has behaved badly ever since his arrival. Taking a dislike to his stable door, he lashed out and smashed the upper portion of it in two, and, still not satisfied, he broke a thick partition dividing his box from another. Cowell has now replaced the wooden partition with a brick wall. For the sake of his new owner, it is to be hoped that Home Made settles down to his new surroundings. Odds and Enda. \ The racing Perle de Leon had at Riccarton will do him a lot of good and he should perform well next time out. Maui was one of the unlucky runners who visited Riccarton. He should do better soon and may next be seen out at Marton. Horomea ran very consistently at the Grand National meeting but was hardly good enough to get into the money. Hounslow is one who should pick up stake money when the company is a little weaker than that which he met at Riccarton.

GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLE-

CHASE

WILTSHIRE MAKES FOURTH

DOUBLE-WINNER

By winning the 1920 N.Z. Grand National Steeplechase, Wiltshire has joined the select band of double winners of that event and as he is only a young horse another National may be within his compass. The only horso to win the event three times is Agent who scoied in 1879, IS3O and again four yeais frd i: ere will be many who wi'i. leak to in 3 Waikato gelding as a likely one to share honours, as triple-winner, with Agent. The other- double win.ie.s a,-c Muciny, who scored in 95 and 'B6. Coalition in 1920 and 1921 and Oakleigh in 1922 and 1923. What the e'tus was like in the earlv eighties ma,} be lomembered by the older identities, but Agent must have been an exceptionally good horse in those days as he carried 12 0, 12.7>, and 12.6 respectively in the Nationals which he won,, which, by the way were over four mile journeys. The biggest weight yet carried to victory was by Canard in 1886, when he carried 12.10. Only two horses have won with over 12.0 since 1897, they being Coalition and Cakleigh.
