ZONOPHONE.
Hawaiian Waltzes. Hilo Hawaiian Orchestra, in "Sweet Hawaiian Dream Girl" (waltz) and "Sleepy Honolulu" (waltz). Zonophone E.E. 156. For those legions of dancers who love very melodious, tranquil waltzes —and for the thousands of Hawaiian musie enthusiasts; —the Hilo Hawaiians have recorded these two beautiful waltzes. They are gems of loveliness' in this particularly exotic musical idiom. Native instruments are used with delicious effect. Steel guitars, naturally, are featured, but the marimba comes into occasional prominence, too. Each waltz has lovely ensemble instrumental' verses. The rhythm throughout is fine for dancing, and the whole nature of ' both selections, commend them, either for dancing or listening Splendid Choir Singing.
Mixed chorus with orchestra. "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Onward Christian SojldierfS," Zonophone E>E. 151.
For all those who are interested in church music—and for many who, generally speaking, are not—this reeord will be a very welcome number. The second of these fine old marching hymns is probably one of the best known sacred songs in the world,. It was composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan, co-author with Gilbert of all the "Gilbert a,nd Sullivan" operas. It is always most popular with children and'is sung by soldiers in war-time. There is a powerful, thrilling appeal in this selection, a combination of the natural appeal of religious mysticism with the equally normal appeal of anything martial. It is the voice of the "Church Militant." The other side of this record contains the well-known Ameriean march hymn, composed to the tune of "John Brown'B Body." Both these selections are sung with intense power and fervour by the mixed chorus. Their attack is superb. Their voices blend admirably. The record is a fine piece pf recording only made possible by the electrical process.
