JUNIOR TRIAL MATCH. /

NORTH 15, SOUTH 0

Although there was a difference of nine .points, in the scores in the above game, played at Levin, on Saturday,.it is by no means indicative of the difference in the merit- ot the two teams, and really, during the second spell, the

South were much the superior side; they were, however, only able to record a further three points, while the North extended a half time score of six to fifteen by the end of the game. The South took the field in the red and blue rep. jerseys, ’while, the North appeared in green and Noith won the toss and preferred to play with the sun at their backs. From the start the game -wag. open and fast and for

some time both ’ sides 'indulged in a good deal of foot-work rather than passing.* The North -were the first to inaugurate a good parsing rush, but the players were too far-back from each other and although the ball was handled by the whole of the back divrsion the ground gained was of little consequence. From a scrum North heeled oufe nicely and Hirini sent the ball over to Newman, wlio had a clear run, but

he V-issccl the -pass badly and Atkins was^quick to pick up and relieve the pres:ure and the game was soon back in midfield. Roe picked up in the loose but w-aaV unsupported. over his opponent’s head lie secured again and passed well out to Saxon, who. however, milked, and had the ball not gone out of touch it is certain thrs advantage would have been lost. From

the line out the ball was knocked’back to Hirini,. who scored a fine try. The angle w r as too much to allow the nrajoi points—North 3, South 0. - South -from, the kick-off started .to force matters and went over m a drib-

blin’’ rush, but North were able to force. After a little give and take ■plav, which drifted to near - tire South 25," Merwood’secured, and showing a fair turn of speed made a beautiful ruu down the line, but lac-k of support lost them what seemed a sure score. South,

were doing some good scrum work and were beating, their opponents’ time a*nd again, but the Noith were cure in their defence and many a good bh. of work by the south was quickly frustrated by the Northern backs. Rue secured in

the open, but failed to rbccivc Huff, who was in close attendance. 811 d kicked over the line enabling South to force. From the kick-ck Ncrtli-return-ed, the ball going cut of touch about the South 25. Irom the throw -in the ball was sent tc the Njitherm bucks and Croon made a good run in near.the corner. Again the try vc gc n l was a failure. —North 6, South o.' Off-side play gave South :i penalty within eacv. chstar.ce, hut Cocker failed with the iclek., North were coon on the offensive again, but from a mark Atkins relieved the pi-esLU-e. Hirini,

with a long kick .infield, opened up a good opportunity, but Croon spoilt it with a knock-on. South wore ctill getting the. advantage of the sc?runs and some good passing rushes were taking place." From one of these Kutoy was forced out nerr the cower and when the ball was thrown in the forwards took it over at their foot and Moore scored in a convenient position, but the major points were not half time came with the score —North 6, South 3.

On play resuming it was evident that South were determined to make a bold bid to even up the score. Indeed most cf the ceeond spell saw the Northern side on the defensive From a scrum South secured but wild passing spoilt any advantage fhey m -, ght have gained and-Nortli carried the play back to the Southern - 25. A goed passing rush, however, saw them again on the attack, and from a pen aby Pou made a good attempt at goal, but the angle and a greasy ball were too tricky for him. Atkins started another passing rush as soon as the ball was ’u motion again, but control was lost near the line and North wane enabled to force. Some gcod kieki 'g by t’e Noum prin- j cipally by ITirini had too Scuta, on the defensive fer a while., bat a good run

by Atkins saved matters. On one or the few occasion-? that No to secured the bail from ■ r scum iar .y passing almost evened the score, lid in the rush over the Tee Roe was ir tome to force. Dav.i- re; the Northern backs going, but fats’t-y h.mdling by Saxon lost them any advantage and the. South were aga’n on the attack. Lavis was slipping and sliding ah over to? ground and was penalised on set erel occasions thiough a krock-on. At v-vc mage of the game, however, he cbeearded his boots. Securing’the be' 1 from Roe he made a valiant da.h down tu? line, but Menvood was too fast and bi ought

him to gram about the South 25. Atkins picked up and sent, infield to Mora who returned it, but the pacs was forward. From the scrum Roe sent' the ball out to Davly but Ryder was able to overtake him. Jude had to retire owing to an injury and he was replaced by Hobeon. set a good game in motion when he passed tc Roe, w r ho transferred to. the ball to Davis. It then went on .to Roe and then to Croon, who scored in a good position. —North 9, South 3.

From the kiek-Qff McDonald started a nice dribbling rush which ended out af touch near the corner flag and from the line-out North were able to clear. South rvere soon back again, and Bowling securing, sent it on to Fafeita, Avho

wajs- able to score. Bowling’s kick failed. —North 9, South 6. The South for a short time were pressing hard, but North managed to break away aud from a loose scramble over the line Hobson scored, but Maboj failed with the kick. —North 12, South 6.

Time was nearly up, but South returned to the attack. Davis made a tine run and relieved. Hobson picked up,' but his run was short, but. Croon was in a handy position to pick up and score. La-nkshcar’s attempt, was the same as every kick during; the day and time was called with —North 15, South 6.

NASH CUP CONTEST. . . SHANNON v. OTAKI A DRAW This game was played on the Shannon Domain on Saturday, and despite the fkct that Otaki had to find two substitutes, while Shannon had to draw on their junior ranks, a very even game was witnessed. The ground was very sticky, making the going hard, and with a greasy ball to handle a good

display was not possible. Nevertheless, the game was interesting, both sides putting up a good fight, and a draw was a ti’uc indication of the mciits of the two teams. The following is the personnel of the two teams: Shannon (reds): Full back. Mason;

thrceequafters, Grey, McEwcn, Robbie, five-eighths, Roberts, Puti; half, Goodwin; wing forward. Guv; forwards, Pratt, Fitzgerald, Satherley, L. Dalzell, Hamua, Robbie and Pavne, Otaki (green): Full-back, Marshall; three-quarters,CEnoka, W. D’Ath, Huff: five-eighths, M. Hakaraia, D’Ath; half, M. Johnson; wing forward, Ogier; forwards, Bevan; Hakaraia, Lima, Grey (2), Tohi and Bishop! The Reds kicked off, a scrum fol-

lowing. from -which- Greens dribblea through to the Red line. The latter worked back to half way, wlieie pla t y hovered for some time, until Greens, from a free kick, removed to the Reds’ territory, where, from a mark, Meta Johnson bad an unsuccessful shot at

goal, the ball falling to rise. Ends got uossession, Goodwin and hleEwen bringing play back to the half-nay line; but a Green passing movement carried play back. Then thcv Keels, headed bv Pratt, Robbie and Dalzell, dribbled down, but Greens saved by forcing. Another liot attack, beaded by Payne,-followed, ending in Dalzed narrowly missing the goal from a free kick. Shortly after a free kick to Greens saw M. Johnson send play to

Reds’ territory, but Mason saved. Reds quickly dribbled back and Huff lucked into touch in lvis own twenty-five, to save. The Dali went back, but Payne with it at his too returned to the corner, where, from a line-out, Roberts kicked across field to McEwen, the bah bouncing over the line, and a Gieen player forcing. The Reds kept up the attack, and a good chance to score was missed owing to Hanna passing on the wron» side. Greens’once more v. oiked but Reds attempted another assault, in which Gray passed to Robbie, but, unfortunately for Reds, Ogier m-

tercepted the pass and kicked the ball well down and' llakaraia, following up, scored near the posts.* 3J* Johnson add ed the extra points. Otaki 5, Shannon nil. A Pod rush saw Puti gather up the ball and run well'down the line. When collared he passed to McEwen, and the latter to Hanna, but what looked like a certain try war.’lost by a forward pass. The 'spell ended shortly after. In the second half Reds early went to the attack, compelling Greens, to force. Soon after, ivL Johnson kicked well down, and the Greens, following up, carried play into Reds’ terri-

tory, but the latter’s forwards. dribbled clear and once more had Gieens on the defensive. The latter were abb 1 to clear and were soon invading the Red line, where, from a scrum, M, John S'>n scored. lie failed to conVeit. Otaki 8, Sha moil nil. After play had travelled up and down the field several times, McEwen, from a Red rush, gathered up the leather and made for the line, and, passing on to Hanna, enabled the latter to score under the oosts. He also added the major points. Otaki 8, Shannon 5. Both teams launched attacks and finally, from a dribbling rush by Reds, Goodwin got over, making the score eight all. 1 Reds were now attacking strongly, and once Greens had to force. Then Reds had two unsuccessful shots at goal from free kicks; in each ease Mason’s kicks, although well directed, fell short. From now on Reds were haying the best of it, but could not again penetrate Greens’ defence. Time was called with honours even. Mr J. Smith controlled the game.
