COUNTY INSPECTOR PROPOSAL

SUBJECT FOR A SPECIAL , MEETING. At the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, a copy was received of the Highways Board’s circular in which it was suggested that local’ bodies should co-operate for the purpose of appointing traffic inspecTlie Chairman (Mr G. A. Monk) said that a similar proposal was made by the Mauawatu Ccunty Council a few years ago. He did not know why it was not proceeded with, but apparently the Counties in this district were not prepared. This Council had felt that the Makara and Hutt Counties were too

far away, while Pohangina and Kiwitea were mostly away from the main roads. There Would then remain only

'four /Counties —Mauawatu, Horowhenua, Kairanga, Oroua. The question had come down to one-of appointing, an inspector for this County, and it might be as well to hold the subject over for further discussion. He felt that, with regard to the main roads, probably four or five local bodies might co-op-erate for the appointment of an inspector; but the point that he wanted ,to raise was, Would the necessity for

control end with the Main Highways? He did not think it would. He thought it would be found that, in this County,

it was necessary that traffic should be controlled on all the roads. He moved that the communication be held over until the Council is considering the ap.pointment of a traffic inspector. Cr. Catley: It is bound to arise in the future. The Chairman: We should .discuss this before the District Highway Council meets. • • Cr. Catley: It is just a question of

coming to van- arrangement with the other local bodies, so as to make the burden one that can be borne. I have opposed the proposal for a County traffic inspector, because I could not see the value that would be returned- for the cost; but it is, a thing that has to come.

. The Chairman: We would need to have a special meeting to deal with it. It is a big question. Cr. Gimblett: That and' superannuation would constitute a good meeting. The Chairman remarked that there was recently a recommendation by the Works Committee that the Council consider the appointment \of a traffic inspector. . It was decided that a special meeting be called to deal with the subject and to be held before the next meeting of the Highways' District Council.
