Illustrating the remarkable results which a new settler, even though a foreigner, may achieve in Australia, the Minister for Home Affairs (Mr Abbott), to-day quoted the case cf Mr M. Fetter, formerly of Russia, and now of Meloourne, who arrived in Australia in 1924, with 16s in his pocket, and to-day is the owner of the Fetter Hosiery Mills, which turns out 20,000 dozen pairs- of hose weekly. Mr Fetter quickly obtained employment on arrival, and with his first 16 months’ savings, brought his wife and family out. BORROWED TO START. He borrowed £2O to buy a hand machine, with a weekly output of ten dozen pairs of half-hose. After a few months he took a little shop and bought two more machines,, and within six months he was in Swanston-street premises, with 20 employees, using power machines. Now the firm occupies a large modern factory in North Carlton, equipped .with automatic hosiery machines, and new machinery is being installed in another factory in Holtom-street, Carlton.
