WOMAN TAX COLLECTOR
Belfast has just appointed its first woman tax collector. The "Northern Whig" laments the want of chivalry shown in thus alloting a woman duties in the performance of which harsh remarks may be encountered, but possibly the woman tax collector will be so gentle herself that tax-paying will be liss onerous to the payers. Feminists in Belfast now hope that with a woman tax collector there may be some improvement in the position of married women tax payers regarding whose treatment they allege some injustice. It is believed that the lady tax collector is not only the first in Belfast, but the first of her kind anywhere. In this particular locality there was noticed an instance of chivalry on the Bench when among a party of cyclists fined for failure to observe the lighting regulations, the young woman was fined half the amount asked of the men. Possibly, however, he was influenced more by the fact that the girl's pay envelope would likely bo less, and not, as some alleged, because the women's cause, as exemplified by the lady collector, was much in mind.
