LAST SEASON’S OPERATIONS IN HOROWHENUA DISTRICT.
In the report of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society for the year ended March 31st, 1939, the following statement from the Levin sub-commit-tee appears: — “The deer-stalking season has been a very good one, although no outstanding heads were secured. . About 20 heads were secured, of which Mr N. Whyte’s 16-pointer,* and Mr Dick’s 14-pointer were the best, both very fine specimens. “The game season opened m fine weather;-fair bags of duck were taken throughout the district. Hares are not plentiful; pheasants are gradually increasing and several sportsmen obtained good sport; quail are to.be seen in fair numbers on the east side near Horowhenua Lake. “Game licenses were taken out as follows: Levin, 76; Shannon, 15; Otaki, 21; Manakau, 6; Oban, 13; Paraparaumu, 12; total, 143. “The fishing season has been very good. The Ohau has been better than for years and many fine catches were made. The Otaki River fished well. “The Committee thanks the Council for the liberal supply of pheasants, trout fry and yearlings.”
