HEIFETZ PHILOSOPHIES
MUSIC NOT ENOUGH. Music alone is not enough to fill an artist’s life, declares Jascha Heifetz, in an interview published in the Dalian (United-States) Morning News.
‘ 1 Music is not sufficiently engrossing to fill a man’s 'life, ’’ said Heifetz. “One must add to it all the other interests he can. For myself, books, travel, people, sports, but not politics. “Politics are not for the musician,’’ he continued. “Fortunately I can speak through music to people of all opinions and races. Ido not need to know their convictions and they do not need to know mine. “When I studied at the conservatory in Leningrad we were not considered properly taught if we knew only our own instruments. We violinists, for instance, had to study something of the piano, the harp and, of course, the viola. '
“I do not play the ’cello. That is very different and difficult. But 1 can play just one scale on it —-the scale of C Sometimes I can bluff on that with people who ask mo to try theiir instruments. ” .. ' ijtvSSS:
