NOTES ON WELLINGTON MEETING
(By "Silken Rein.")
The Jockey's Ladder.
R, Reed was the most successful horseman at the meeting with four wins, while H. Goldfinch rode three winners, and Hobson, Syme and A. E. Ellis piloted two winners each. Tlie winning jockeys and apprentices listis still"headed'by A. E. Ellis, but his brother L. J. Ellis who was second, ha.? now to share honours for that position with R. Reed. L. J. Ellis was unJueky and did not steer a winning mount through the three day's racing. The list is as follows: A. E. Ellis 60 L; J. Ellis 56 ;R, Reed .. .. -.. .. 56 L G. Morris 53 H. Goldfinchh 45 Extra Day Not For Levin. The Levin Racing Club's application, which was supported by a recommendation from the Wellington District Committee, for an extra day's racing, was not granted by the Racing Conference. The only two licenses available were allocated to Whangarei R.C. jfor April 3 and Taumaranui R.C. for 'a date to be applied for JLevin and Otaki Dates.
The Otaki Maori Racing Club were granted' November 21 and 22, in lieu of November 1 and 2, subject to no objection by the Levin E.G. Should the latter club object, the Otaki jI.R.C. will be granted the dates formerly applied for. The date of the Levin meeting is fixed for November 23rd. Two Firsts and Second.
The local bred Horomea is a much improved mare and proved the most consistent runner at the meeting. On the opening day she was easily beaten into second {dace, but i;i the shorter races was much 'better. On Saturdayshe Avas always in a good position and won fairly easily from Amorist. The daughter of Quararitine-Hcrmia has been nominated for jumping events at Ricearton next month and if taken down, she should at least pay the expenses of the trip. Improving.
A hack rummer, Otaura Lass whose form during the present season has been anything but good, is at last giving promise of getting on the winning list. She was unplaced on the opening day at Trentham, fourth in a close finish on Thursday and third to Havering and Maori Boy on Saturday. ■that' running it appears as though shs is suited with a heavy going and will score when the company is a little weaker. ' A Good Hack. Havering is a hack well above the average and ran very consistently at Trentham. He was unlucky in meeting Mark Mint on the first two days of tHe fixture, but on Saturday he made 110 mistake of winning. With all his. 10.9 he was able to get a big break from the field rightt from the word "go" and entering the straight he had a : lead of six to eight lengths from a bunched field. The race was a furlong further than his two previous efforts and he had had enough of it when he reached the judge with a length to spare. He was nearly beaten by the distance. A Mud Lark The open six furlong handicap was a difficult race to follow through misty rain The field was well bunched entering the straight, where Taboo was well in the rear, but in the run home he came from a long way and was beating everything in the finish Had his run been a little earlier he would have probably beaten the winner He is a sprinter who is always at home in the mud and may'make amends at Ricearton for his defeats at Trentham. The Winter Hurdles. In the principal event of the day, Mister Gamp was made a very short priced favourite in a field of twelve, King's Gua-d and Overhaul being best backed of the others. Prince Lu began best from Overhaul, Red Fuschia, Comical, Aberfeldy and Locarno. Prince Lu was still heading the field passing the stand and the order going out of the straight was Prince Lu, Comical, Overhaul, Aberfeldy, Red Fusehia, Locarno, Troilus, Home Made and Mister Gamp. Overhaul and Comical improved their positions along the back while King's Guard and Mister Gamp also made a forward move. First into ■the straight were Overhaul and Mister Gamp, followed by Comical, Locarno, King's Guard and Red Fusehia. From there they raced to the judge in that order, King's Guard displacing Locarno for fourth position.
Mister Gamp ran a fine race, but was not good enough to concede 2411)3 to Overhaul in the heavy going. The winner crossed in front of Mister Gamp and Comical and an enquiry resulted in Overhaul's rider, A. Hobson, being suspended for five weeks from Saturday. The crossing did not appear to have any affect on the result of the race as Overhaul was going well at the finish. Comical ran one of his best races this season and looks likely to be prominent in his Grand National engagements.
Maunga Pays Well. A field of twelve were sent out to contest the July Steeplechase, the public making Pabriano the favourite, with Alaric and Radiate next in demand. A drizzling rain had set in and the race was run in very unpleasant conditions. Boomcrday was prominent at the early part and first past the stand
the first time round was Brigadier Bill, followed by Glendowie, Royal Elm, Radiate, Alaric, Fabriano and Matu, with Maunga well in the rear. Radiate, Boomerday and Brigadier Bill were prominent ahng the back where Fabriano lost his rider. Radiate was in charge passing the stand a second time, from Boomerday, Royal Elm, Alaric and Kawini. Maunga was still plodding along behind the others. Along the-back Matu and Maunga improve;! their positions and were headed into the straight by Radiate and Alaric. Maunga then moved up and finish?:l strongly to beat Matu by three lengths, with Alaric three lengths further back third. Radiate and Kawini were next to finish.
The" win of Maunga was a real surprise to form followers, and he finished better than anything. The going was very sloppy and just to his liking. Matu ran best of the others. Brigadier Bill pulled up along the back 7ii the last round.
