SPORTING NOTES.
(By ••'Silken Rein.") Last Year Weights Compared. A comparison of the weights allotted the candidates for the Wellington Steeples, Avith the handicaps of the same race of last year makes interesting reading. On the last occasion Beau Cavalier Avas top-weight Avi+h Lj.l3, lib beloAV the maximum wherea* this year the highest is Nukumai 11.7. Gl.jndowie and KaAvini which ar'3 both on the 11.1 mark had 11.5 and 10.!) respectively. The former did not accept while KaAvini finished next t; the winner, (Pouri 9.9).' Brigadier Bill has 10.2 as against 10.6 previously a.nd Matu 9.5', as against. 9.0. Maunga has apparently receded a good dta! in the estimation of Mr Coyle as the Mountain Knight gelding is in on the minimum for next Aveek's race, while last year he Avas asked to carry 10.4. Kame-hameh-a is the only other accep-yr whose name appears among last year's handicaps. He has 21b less on this occasion. Tresnam. Much Avas expected of Tresham as a hurdler, but so far he has failed to show any form to enthuse about in his displays in public. The peculiar part of it is that his priA'ate essays leave nothing to be desired, making it difficult to account' for his failures. Time may work an improvement, though it is believed that the black gelding is at present subject to a bleeding trouble after any amount'of'work.' He is? an acceptor for the opening event at Trentham next week. A Consistent Light-weigh,t. Fabriano, who is due to contest the Wellington Steeples, has been a consistent performer this season and in his six starts has been placed first on three occasions and twice second. In his.'first start at Riverton on April Ist he Avon by 15 lengths from Erin-go-bragh and on the folloAving day fell, this J being the only time he has been unplaced. His • next outing Avas at Dunedin June meeting Avhere on the opening day he Avon by 50 yards from Xylotis; the second day he Avent under to" Mainspring by half a length and on the concluding day beat, Mainspring by five lengths. His only start since Dunedin fixture Avas at the postponed meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, Avhere he was beaten by Radiate who had an advantage of 41bs. Fabriano's best performance Avas in the Otago Steeples, an event which for. distance,, is approximately the same as that of the Wellington Steeples so in that respect this runner is not likely to be troubled and he may prove a very tough proposition with only 9.0 to carry.
Odds and Ends. "Kawhakina who ran second to Anolo in the Patea County Gup is an acceptor for the Whyte Handicap. The Kilbroney gelding is not up to this class but it is a race in which the unexpected often happens. A hack runner, who ran second to Hop wood at Waverlcy on Saturday is due to race in the concluding event at Trentham. on Wednesday next. This is a race that should suit her and would only need a. little better luck than she has been-experienc-ing lately, to win.
