THE IDEAL LUNCH

Dr. Mary lialton, a woman authority on' dietetics, comes to the defence of the feminine way of dieting and the desire for slim figures. She says:— “If working girls and women he- 1 tween 15 and 30 are dying more rapidly than males of the same group, I would not blame their noonday diet, for boys eat practically the same things as the girls. I would say lack of sunlight is the most baneful influence. The great problem of to-day is to bring industry into the sunlight.

“Girls work harder than men. A woman’s work is never done, as truly to-day as ever. The working girl gets home and often does housework. The boys escape this and get all the sunlight there is. Maybe that is why their death rate is lower.

“This craze for having women become fatter is wrong. Obesity is a disease. Some of those clamouring for fatter women arc getting their terms mixed. That voluptuous beauty ascribed to the youthful female is more often due to perfect health, a perfect texture of the skin and to youthful vitality than to over-plumpness. “Let the girls eat their ice-cream sodas and sandwiches for lunch. An analysis of these foods shows a high percentage of calories. As to the supposed effect of dieting upon the birth rate, let us remember that voluntary parenthood springs from intellect and economic stress, and not from dieting.” Dr Mary Swartz Rose, of Teachers’ College, Columbia University, gives the following as an ideal lunch "for the business girl: Cream of tomato soup, 225 calories; two pieces of toast, 100 calories; butter, 100 calories, rice pudding, 325 calories.
