STUDY OF FORM FOR TO-MORROW'S MEETINGS.
Good Fields at Local Fixture.
(By "Silken Rein.") • Tn morrow (Saturday) and on Monday the Otaki Clut wilf U their «^ KnumSers journey f?om Wellington and as far north as Wanganui to attend the meeting.
\ The .acceptances received by the elub present a very healthy aspect numerically, while tho class of runner engaged is also really , good. Present indications are that the track will bein capital order and a successful meet* ing is anticipated.
In the following review, a form guide or chart is also given, which . should be of- much interest to the form follower. The figures preceding the name of the runner in the list of acceptors which follok, denotes how each horse has run in its ■ last three starts: 1 is 'shown'for a ■ win, 2 second place, 3 third, 0 unplaced and (*) not started during the period from whoch the chart is compiled, i.e., March 20th (first day of Manawatu meeting- to date.
Following is the programme:— \ t it *ft TAEARUA HURDLES of 150
~ ;Jn-. the. opening event form is'; un- . doubtedly in favour of Red Bank, who Tan. second and first at the Wanganui meeting and first at Marton. The All Bed gelding has a big impost but, at 'tho same time, is not altogether handicapped out of it and is likely to ; be suited" with the course. Pantagrucl will not be fancied to any extent while Sir Moment has no recent performances. The fact remains, however, that he was similarly placed last year and won comfortably on both days. From 'that. Sit is concluded that he races best when "fresh and should be fairly well supported. Lady Gay . has not been a success at the game although she has been close oh several occasions. Peshwa has not been, seen out for some considerable time but he piet with success last year at Wangan ui and may be good enough to cause a surprise. Eakauponga is only a moderate sort and can win in weaker company. His last success was at Hawkes Bay. Modern is one likely to maki a good showing to-morrow and will need only to jump well to be in the .running. Of the others Pale Star and Sneerer will carry little support. The pair that read best are Sir Moment. Bed BaHk.
191 C KUKU MAIDEN, of 100 sovs.,
The usual big field is promised for the maiden event and a good price is h being anticipated. Golden Flower, . Gratton, Warzone and Painting are -.-. the only runners who have shown any ¥ form during the past two months. Form - before that period however, is in fav'/jpui of Fortalice, Bon Acre, Grattan Naselle and of these probably Bon ''Acre is best. The event last year was ' ; wpn by the successsful Fordell stables, ~.with Consent, and who are represented .gonjthis occasion with Trench Raid, a /■•2-year-old gelding by Night Raid— V,Petal Dust. Roundelay a well bred ■"youngster who coat 600 gns as a year.'ling is reported to be a likely sort and %j*m run in a bracket with Killogie. ssUle it is-expected that Trench Raid i»8 likely to carry off the prize, a study
of performances make it hard to se past Bon Acre Grattan.
1 A WAITOHU HACK of 130 sovs.
Practically only half of the 14 runners, due to face the starter in this event, have recent form. Brown Sugar has had most success in "recent outings, but the class was* not strong. Grand Acre is a first-class hack and is showing a return of form. He ran second to Cool Mint at Wanganui and jsn that performance, looks like being in the money to-morrow, if start-, ed. Second Thought appear? to Have gone stale, but he can gallop when in the mood, while Propaganda, who will be much benefitted by Ms outing at Wanganui, is almost sure to carry the bulk of the money. Dermod is not a bad one, but seems inconsistent. Lucky Bag has no recent form. Australia who was decidedly unlucky at Marton Will halve to be treated with respect and as he is now at his best, he should beat more- than beats him. ■ Bissac raced at Masterton for a second to First Ruler and Otaki is a course tlia'; may cuit her., Golden Flower has an earlier engagement, while, of the others, Wine Tray and Money Mint are. best. In the likely absence of •Grand Acre, who has been sold to a Southern owner, the best pair theii appear to be Propaganda Australia.
The principal race of the meeting, the Ruakawa Cup, has drawn an exceptionally good field and the honour of No. 1 saddle-cloth has been handed, to Paitonu with 9.0. The Bisogna gelding ran a fine race in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui ,but on the second day of the meeting ran very badly. Lady Limond and Black Mint were the pair that finished next to him when he scored and a comparison of the weights inclines one to fav--our Black Mint, who incidentally has been running solid" races on a going that suits him. On this point it will probably be in his favour to-morrow. Merry Damon's performances at Feilding at Easter were really good and a reproduction of that form would win him this race. The Greyspear filly, Spenrmiss is. running right at the top of her form at decent outings and made a good effort at Wanganui, when she won on the second day. Blimp has been more or less a failure of late, but it is understood tha't luck has not been altogether with him and he has been galloped on on several occasions. It would not be wise to disregard him yet for his disappointing displays. Aiiolo may possibly need, the race and in the case of Lady Limond it is hard to make any decision. If she could be relied on to run as well as she did in her last start, she would go close to winning. Shining Armour has got as far as being considered a back number, but he has a wonderful record for this course that may be 'worth considering. Royal Mint and Imperial Spark have claims for support while Briar Root is fancied in some quarters. Henna should race better than she did at Wanganui, but it is doubtful if she is ready yet. Borsalene and Shrewd are a little out of class, but tho latter is an honest one who will have a pull in the weights. Kilbronsyth has* not been a success of late but there is every reason to believe that, a big horse like he is, this distance will suit him far better than a "six." There is no denying that it is a difficult race for the speculator and it is likely to be an even betting
race. A pair that will have to be res pected are Black Mint Blimp.
O Ift OTAKI HACK of 130 sovs., £,OW 1 mile 55yds.
The hack distance race has the smallest field of the day, only ten surviving the final payment. Royal Black was in real good trim at Feilding, winning on both days, but did not do so well at Masterton. Tho first day at that meeting he finished a head behind Skyrider and on the second day filled third-birth to Pull Mark and Atholspear with heads separating. It is seven weeks since he raced, so the second day may suit him better. By reason of his second at Wanganui, .Disrank has come into favour, and he is entitled to much respect. Skyrider and Gold Bag have both ran unplaced in their last two starts, butof the pair, the former reads best. Kiriana's performances at the West Coash. meetings is good enough to bring him some support to-morrow. In fact, on form he makes the strongest appeal. First Ruler and Balloon will, be most favoured of the others. To reduce the selection to two runners, it is left to Kiriana Disrank.
9 1 C HUIA HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.
The .second important event of the day has a big field of acceptors and the New Zealand Cup winner, Oratrix, has been allotted 8.9. It is understood that the daughter of Oratress will be taken to Australia shortly and this is her only engagement before the trip. While she cannot be altogether left out of the calculations, it is doubtful if there will be much support for her. Piuthair's lack of recent racing will' find her neglected, but Consent should soon be ready again and the course should suit him. Dobbin is running toform and may prove hard to beat. Moutoa- Treasury generally races well when fresh'and on that account she will have to be given a chance. Royal Game does" not appeal and Bonogne is not consistent. First Acre is expected to eoirite to light shortly an'd his home course will be in his favour. Joy Bird has a good record at Otaki, but •a furlong further would luit her better, while Maui also seems to have a liking for this track. His recent performances are good enough to deserve support. Broad Acre has been consistent in recent starts and will be unlucky not to win shortly. Of the remaining six runners, Last Crust aud Monsogne will find most favour and particularly the latter, in the event of Paitonu scoring in the big race. Relying on the information that Broad Acre is a doubtful starter, preference is tlien given Maui Moutoa Treasury. 4 Q TE lIORO HACK, of 150 sovs., 7 furlongs.
The concluding event is not a really good field, but that will not affect the machine figures. Monsoguc, High Soe iety, Mothplane, Malahat, Bissau and Monetize arc the' only runners with any recent form. Monsogne's performances are undoubtedly the best, but she may prefer her earlier engagement. With 9.11, however, she will not •not make a very strong appeal in this event. The favoured pair may be High Society Malahat.
