In connection with the reconstruction of the Rangitikei river bridge at Bulls, the Highways' Board, on the occasion of its recent visit to that district, took an opportunity of inspecting the present bridge and also the proposed new sites.' The present bridge, which is in need of substantial iepair, is narrow and permits of one-way traffic only, and a new two-way bridge is to be built, instead of carrying out repairs to the present narrow structure. A proposal had been submitted for the construction of the new bridge, some distance clown stream from the present one, but after an inspection and consideration of reports by the Public Works Department's engineers, the Board has decided that the site of the new bridge shall be just above the present bridge. Prior to its visit, the Board had indicated that it would pay a subsidy of £3 for £1 towards the cost of the new bridge, but deputations from the local authorities waited on it with a request that the board pay a subsidy of £5 for £l. After consideration of the fasts, the Board decided to adhere to the -previous subsidy of £3 for £l.
